DIY - Final Drive and Gearbox oil change

Here is a DIY for the Final Drive a Gearbox oil change.

Dealer quoted $450 for this work, I did this for about $60!

Parts:
1L of Castrol SAF-XO/ Syntrax 75W90
1 x washer for FD - 33117695219
1 x washer for FD - 07119963132
1 x washer for Gearbox - 07119963300
1 x washer for Gearbox - 0711996320

Tools:
T40
T50 (rear wheel, my Kineos use a Hex 8, so just check)
19mm socket
Hex 8
Hex 6
100ml syringe
Oil catch pan
Torque wrench

Take the bike for a 15min ride to get the oil warm in the FD & gearbox.

FINAL DRIVE:


Remove exhaust and rear wheel


Remove the FD drain plug with Hex 6 and have a oil pan inderneath to catch the oil. I let it drain for 30 mins.





While you wait you can check things like your rear brake pads or start on the gearbox.

Clean out the drain plug which is magnetic and catches particles.


Remove FD filler bolt with Hex 6. With the bike in neutral, give the hub a few turns to make sure all the oil is out.


Add new rubber seal to FD drain plug and screw back into the FD at 20Nm


Use the disposable syringe to fill the FD through the top filler. With a 100ml syringe you'd need 100ml on the first fill and 80ml on the last. Do it precisely and slowly. This needs to be exactly 180ml oil, no guessing here! Careful not to spill oil on the brake parts.




Once filled with 180ml, add teh new copper washer to the filler bolt and toghten to 20Nm.

That's it! Reinstall the wheel (wheel bolts 60Nm) and exhaust (bracket 10Nm, clamp to header 25Nm)

GEARBOX:
Loosen the filler bolt with a Hex 8


Remove the drain plug with 19mm socket with oil catch pan underneath



Let it drain for 30 mins.
Clean out the magnetic filler and add new washers to both filler and drain plug



Put the drain plug back and tighten to 30Nm.

Fill the gearbox with the syringe with 700ml oil. You should see the oil almost seeping over the filler threads.



Tighten filler bolt to 30Nm

You are done! Take for a ride and check for leaks.

Dispose of the old oil in an environmentally responsible manner!

good one mate what a great text you should keep all the pics ext and put it in a manual i will buy it i need to do this service and soon the valve clearances thanx again

Cheers.

BTW, Very unlikely valve clearance changes required on the DOHC engines before 80,000km.

You are better doing your own services as I can guarantee the tech working on your bike will only let it drain 2 mins and not clean out the magnetic catchment

Hey Roady nice write up👍🏻, that's the new replacement oil for the saf xo isn't it? Same stuff different name they tell me. Where are you buying it in one litre bottles.
No one stocks it here and want me to order 6 one litre bottles at once. Maybe I could try a MAN dealer. Since my last 6 bottles ran out I've bought some from the bmw dealer but they only fill my bottles out of their drum , not the best way.

Yes, Syntrax is the replacement for SAF-XO. Been around for a while now, but can be tricky to find. It is Long-Life oil and I assume you can use other 75W90 if you change more regularly, but given the sensitivity of the FD I'd stick with the Castrol SAF-XO/Syntrax. Dealers have it and you can find it on eBay too.
