I know there is a BMW alarm, but if I put an alarm on, I will be looking for something thats noisy, and sends me a signal on my phone that somebody is messing with my NineT. This day and age, thats not asking too much. Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Heck, if I can start my car from 8 stories up, and 1/4 mile away via cell phone, surely theres something like this available.

.. you gotta buy the car .... :p:p

BMW bike alarms - not that sophisticated

find a local bike/car electrician - they usually know what works best ... that way you have a place to go later for help or complaints ;)

Not sure I trust the hooligans around here in the car alarm business. Had some advanced stereo work done by a couple of them and was not very satisfied. They did install the remote start on my Expedition, for remote startup on cold days, and all seems well. Good advice though, I think I will start first with my buddy at the BMW bike dealer. I bet this question has come up before, and they do carry a large selection of aftermarket parts.

The german bike magazin MOTORRAD organized a test. Here's the final result:
You can see at least the product names so you can search on the internet

I'm considering going with one of those GPS locater companies, against a small monthly fee, a certain 'GPS fenced area' can be established, and if the bike leaves those parameters an alarm is triggered to your phone and shows the whereabouts of the bike. It's a small gadget which can be hidden on the bike, battery life is good for about 6 days - should be enough time for recovery.

Then again, Tassie is a VERY small place with low population ... maybe I only need to get paranoid when planning to park near or in a bigger metropolis ... hm?

A few friends who have been on around the world trip tried Spot and they are pretty satisfied with it SPOT SATELLITE MESSENGER :: HOME PAGE
I have a spot, for when we are in the extreme back country. I am looking for something that makes a bunch of noise, when the bike is touched, sends a message to my phone, and tracks it also. Something that makes a bunch of noise may prevent having to track it after the fact.

I am most probably going to get a BMW alarm fitted. Does anyone else have one? It costs 350 Euro in total they tell me. (It already has a built-in immobiliser.)

I'm just locking the bars, and with the programmed key, I'll live with that. I can understand someone putting on an alarm if they live, visit, or frequent sketchy areas, and the bike is there for extended times. But, cars and bikes are stolen in high end areas too.

Yeah, the best thing to do with no alarm is to lock the bars. You could also cover it frequently, with a cheap bike cover, to hide what it really is. :) I've read it's good to even put some duct tape/glue/etc. in conspicuous locations to make it look like it's falling apart/undesirable. :D

The upside is if your insurance gives you a break for an alarm as mine does. I have the factory alarm, you don't need it but like many things, its a nice to have and practical when parking publicly as I do errands on it all the time. I've been robbed twice so paranoia comes standard.

I had the dealership install the BMW alarm when they delivered the bike. It seems to work fine however I've yet to figure out the fine tuning of it as you are supposed to be able to program it to auto arm after a certain amount of time etc. Otherwise, it works great and if I was more patient it would be all I would need. If you haven't installed already good luck and if you have I hope it's going well.

I had the BMW alarm fitted on Saturday. Cost €299. It is preset to work automatically with the ignition and doesn't make any other noises such as the annoying on/off bleep - so won't wake people at night when I arrive/leave. It certainly works because I triggered it when I furtled around in the topbox. Comes with two remotes.

Just don't buy a Scorpion alarm system. they only have a chargeable remote now and if the charge goes down, you are stuck with the alarm on.
Yes, they do have a way to program the bike to disarm w/o the remote - just in case. But it does not work on the R9t. I called them and was advised the programing does not work with all vehs.

Great, a remote that can only be used if it is charged. An issue just waiting to happen on a trip.

I have used these before for drones:

Mini GPS Tracking Device Tracker Vehicle Real Time Smallest SPY GSM GPRS TK102 | eBay

They can be configured in many ways and pay as you go SIMs valid as long as you use a bit of credit once a year are easy and cheap to purchase.

It is trivial to wire them to the bike battery and put in a hidden power switch, the onboard battery lasts 96 hours if the thief disconnects the bike battery. The thefts I worry about is a few blokes and a ute, at night. It would be nice to call the cops and say "my motorbike has been stolen and its current position is X, go get em".
