Had a bit of a scare on the weekend while traversing a nice sweeping right hand bend over an apex at about 95km/h. An echidna was casually strolling across the road right where I was planning to be so panicked slightly, grabbed brakes which stood the bike up and I target fixated on the road sign and large potholes that I was now heading for in a bit of a convenient dirt run-off area to the left of the road. Missed the sign but plowed through the very deep pothole. Managed to stay on the bike without being thrown off or lying it down somehow but when the dust settled and I'd realised that I hadn't actually pooped myself, I looked down to see that my Ebay special seat hump had come to a stop next to me on the dirt rather than being attached to the rear frame of the bike.

The substantial force of impacting the far side of the pothole had managed to snap the plastic base clean off around the retaining bolt. So, the bottom is knackered, the top of it fared a bit better with some scuff marks on the paintwork. The rest of the bike seems to have survived ok. Couldn't find anything leaking, bent, broken or busted so I got off pretty lightly, me thinks. This provides me with a slight conundrum.

Do I buy a new plastic wonder hump from Ebay?

This would provide me with an opportunity to attempt to paint the top of the old hump in a style that matches my brushed aluminium tank and then screw it onto the base of the new hump. Has anyone managed to paint an "Ebay special" plastic hump to match the brushed aluminium tank with any success? If so, how did you go about it? I've searched but can only find evidence of people who have used steel wool/sandpaper on their genuine OEM normal silver humps which isn't quite the same as attempting to paint the plastic version.

OR

Is anyone aware of an Ebay special version where they have imitated the brushed aluminium look "straight from factory"? The only ones I can find are just the plain silver, black and grey of the original Pure.

The reason I'd prefer to get another Ebay special is:
1) the cost - I'm not really up for spending $800AUD (possibly more now with inflation going nuts) on a new hump and I haven't seen any OEM ones going cheap anywhere.
2) I think the plastic versions are much more forgiving to a bit of accidental abuse as they are more flexible and don't dent or scratch as easily as the OEM ones.

Any info or advice would be very much appreciated from the brains trust here.

I bought a ABS hump on ebay and it is virtually indistinguishable from the OEM alu version and is good value. Alternatively if the surround is undamaged you could just buy the alu part of the hump (OEM ref 77348533898) rather than the whole assembly which saves something.

Heh heh. I definitely plan on avoiding them like the plague from now on. Although, since Oz has been having record breaking rains of late and the already rubbish N.S.W. roads suffering disgracefully poor quality surfaces due to the aforementioned rain, it will be very very hard to avoid them. Some (especially on the M2 here in Sydney) are literal death traps for bikes. Some are elongated, about front tyre width and around 15-20cm deep. To attempt to spot them before its too late I leave twice the normal gap between the vehicle in front and myself now which, unfortunately, is an invitation for every idiot in a car who doesn't have to think about road surfaces to just pull in to. Sure gets frustrating after about the tenth car.

Yep, my Ebay ABS hump looked just like the OEM ones that others around here had which is why I reckon I'll stick with the ABS version, despite an OEM brushed one coming up in the Marketplace here in the last day or two - as tempting as it is, it'd still be a $500AUD purchase to get it here. The only problem is that I can only find the plain silver (or black or grey or the racer striped version), can't seem to find any that have the brushed look, which is what I really want.

You raise a good point about just getting the aluminium OEM part. I'd bet that that is still quite exe and I'd still have to buy a replacement ABS unit to get the new base, so cost may still be up there. Interesting point though which I will look into. Thank you.

I did check out the vinyl option a couple of years ago but couldn't find a vinyl wrap that matched the tank close enough. Looked online and also visited a couple of local automotive vinyl wrapping companies. There was a lot of stainless steel looking wraps but I couldn't find anything that was close enough to the "hand-brushed aluminium" look.

Do you remember what vinyl you used? Manufacturer or possibly code for the exact type?

It was a while ago and I don't have the details but have attached a photo of how it turned out. I have the black original 2015 so only had a small section of brushed alu on the black tank. The hump was a different shade of silver but this vinyl gets it very close to the tank colour. I'll see if I can get details from my mate who did the job.

@dodgybugga glad you were still upright. Never heard of echidnas, again what learned. Here’s an idea for a little project on your own, I saw this the other day, attached to something just as gorgeous…;-)

No, sorry, its not a bolt-on part for sale anywhere, but rather hand-made. But, just maybe, you can find some genius Aussie to fabricate that for ya?

If you're still working on this project, I have a 3M product called Designer Wraps in Brushed Metal Titanium where the brushed effect is pretty good.
There is a Brushed Aluminium - code: BR120 but it's hard to tell on-line how bright the silver colour is.
I bought an 'Accessory Pack' from SuperCheap that includes squeegee and trim knife all in a tube.
I can take a picture to compare the brushed effect with the OEM hump if it helps?

I've just ordered an El Cheapo gloss silver hump for my bike which has a brushed aluminium tank and would also be interested in wrapping it to try and get something close to a match. I'll look into the 3M product to see if I can source a piece small enough to cover the hump.

Sorry @Norbi and @Mr. T. I responded several days ago to your posts but looks like my response has disappeared into the ether. Thats the second time that has happened for some reason on this site. Not sure what went wrong. Anyway, I'll retype my efforts now.

@Mr. T - you are a champion! Thanks very much for digging that up for me. I'll see if I can source some locally somehow. The local wrapping companies all seemed to have 3M which were either too light or whiter looking or too dark, I suspect, as you found also. I'll try and give the Avery stuff a go.

Looks like you have the same idea as me with the stripes although I am still making up my mind on whether to have the thick and thin stripes or just two matching stripes. Plus I'm planning on using some black retroreflective vinyl, just for a bit of extra nighttime visibility, and run it from the front on my Rizoma low fairing, along the tank and then along the hump. Your's looks awesome. I hope mine turns out similar.

@Norbi - that does look waaaay cool. I like that! Where did you see that? There is a bike customiser/fabricator that has opened just down the road a couple of months ago. They have some funky stuff. I'll go and see what they say but I would be thinking it wouldn't be cheap. Thanks heaps for the idea!

The Echidna is a funny little guy, kind of a cross between a porcupine and an ant eater. They are pretty harmless and cute which is why I took the offroad option rather than chance hitting the poor little bugger who was only doing what Echidnas do. He didn't hang around to see if I was alright though. Just buggered off.

@Captain - I think the 3M code BR120 was the stuff the local car wrapping companies had and, if I remember correctly, wasn't quite the right colour or "brushed" effect. It seemed a bit light or bright, as you put it. However, that was a couple of years ago and I believe now that, after a bit of recent research, 3M upgraded their wraps from the 1080 series to the 2080 series which is slightly different (it has a glossy protective layer on the top that 1080 didn't have among other things). So, I might go back and have another look just to see if it is different now. In the meantime, I'd love to take you up on your offer of a picture to show what you've got. Always up for a bit of bike porn! ;)

@Sundodger - Heh heh! Just your member name sounds like you are incredibly similar to me! :ROFLMAO: I'd be interested in what you can find as well. I'll let you know anything I come up with.

In the meantime I've ordered a slightly different ABS hump or more of a passenger seat cover, just for something different, till I can suss out what I want to do. Should arrive in a couple of days hopefully.

A couple of days? Hope you have more luck than me. I ordered an el cheapo hump on fleabay from those master craftsmen and expert copy artists up top. After a week passed and no shipping notification was forthcoming I politely asked them to stick it in the post if at all possible. Got a reply, sorry, we're in lockdown, cannot get to post office.
I honestly don't know if I should laugh or cry at their plight. But I guess now they do have the ultimate get out for advertising and taking people's money for :poop: that they in all likelihood don't have in stock anyway! And yes, in all probability it does serve me right for handing my hard earned over to them in the first place!!

Oh that sucks @Sundodger. Mine did take 3.5 weeks to arrive which was slightly faster than I was anticipating but it was coming from Hong Kong rather than the mainland and I think I got a bit lucky.

I guess their lockdowns make ours seem pretty tame in comparison so may be they legit can’t get to the post office.

I’ve got my fingers crossed for your impending delivery!

In the meantime, I’m pretty happy with this temp solution till I come up with something better.

That looks really good, can't complain about the quality from how it looks in the photos. My hump is finally in the mail so fingers crossed I might see it before 20231
I noticed that your bike doesn't have LED indicators which surprised me. For some reason I thought all Australian delivered R9t's were fitted with LED's. Clearly I was wrong but in my defence, since retiring I try and spend as little time as possible in the local dealer looking at bikes. I've found the temptation too great in the past, which was fine when the salary went into the bank every fortnight and I could justify the purchase of a new bike because they were my daily transport. Now they're just toys, nice ones granted, but still toys.

Thanks matey. For a piece of ABS plastic its probably as good as it gets, quality wise. Fit was good and no seams visible anywhere. Paint seems to be good but will see how it goes in some sun and heat.

Glad yours is finally on its way and hopefully will beat the Xmas rush.

I believe that the old incandescent bulbs were the norm up until the 2017 (or maybe it was 2018 - can't remember) models came with the LED indicators as standard. When one of my existing bulbs goes I'll replace them all with LED bulbs.

Heh heh. I hear you. The BMW stealership is literally across the park from my place which is far too tempting for my distinct lack of willpower, so I just make sure I don't go over that side of the park anymore. Plus I am between contracts at the moment so definitely keeping an eye on the outgoings so I know what you mean. At least I am getting plenty of time to ride now!
