Hi gents need some help…like to attach hard panniers on the R9T…found the Craven Panniers which I remember from way back…contacted the company they do not make any specific hardware for this model only for a few older Bimmers… I really like the old look of the Cravens and it may not look to bad on the bike…was thinking to buy the Craven Panniers, and hardware from SW Motech

The indicators must be moved back as you can see they are inside the cardboard box…the passenger pegs may be ok

Used an old box and cut it down to the correct dimensions and gave it a little mock up to see how it fits…not a. Bad fit over all…but just clears the silencer, the rear indicator lights need to be moved backwards from present location, the pegs seem to fit ok but need to be down or removed

The hardware is from SW Motech attachments to the bike and to the back of the panniers…Craven says that other hardware can be drilled and attached to their Panniers but obviously it needs to be thought out before the drilling starts. Would this attachment system be able to hold loaded panniers?

This is the Craven Hard Pannier …again a bit of old school look
The Panniers would be even with the top or bottom of the rear seat not sure. On the silencer side the distance between silencer and seat is 30cm exactly the height of the Pannier at 31cm could be adjusted up a little.
The other thing I’m worried about is the three attachment points from the bike to the panniers, would it be able carry the weight if panniers loaded?

I would really like the forums input….is it realistic to do?….any problems you guys see?…cost wise maybe best just to buy the SW Motech Legend bags?
Hope I’m some what clear what I’m trying to do Thanks Steve

I take it you want to go with SW motech; so if the panniers are removed it is a clean look?
This could work just fine. The 3 point system on the SW motech carry system is very rugged and will hold the panniers just fine (of course do not over-load them and use common sense). You could always add some kind of extra cross-brace for extra stiffness in-between the panniers.

If you plan on going this route, look at the SW motech Universal holder. Universal Seitenaufnahme für SLC Seitenträger rechts
I think this is your best bet in attaching the cases in a sturdy way. You could also look at a sysbag adapter plate.

They would have to sit higher to clear the exhaust though on the left side. So a bit higher / even with the rear hump.

  • Looking at the 30mm (i think u mean mm?) clearance for the exhaust; this should be fine. Bags have about the same clearance. If you are worried you could always add some heat shielding to the bottom of the pannier for extra protection.
  • Moving the indicators back can be done with specific brackets (some companies sell those)

Make sure your clearance is checked with the rear fully compressed. You have to take into consideration the suspension travel.
Is there a way to get a set of shorter bags? Soft bags are a little more forgiving when they touch your swing arm or muffler. Ask me how I know.

Balloo there are no shorter bags …never thought about suspension great point…yes the bags look nice that was the reason I’m researching this… I remember the craven bags were used on bikes back in the days

They are definitely old-school cool. I ran into the problem of my panniers touching the swing arm and the muffler when I lowered them a little bit the first time. The BMW soft panniers had sharp edges that dug into my rotund posterior. My first attempt was to re-drill holes and lower the entire bag. That's when I noticed the contact points. I just raise the bags back to the original holes and cut the hard backing down and rounded the corners. The cool thing about that SW Motech set up is you can attach any bag that you fancy with a backing plate. I am keeping my eye out for a couple rolltop dry bags.

The cardboard Cravens may not hold up very well and in the rain or wet riding conditions they may fail completely. I would look for a more modern and robust material for panniers if I were you. I might even consider a set that locks and locks onto your bike.
Yes I was worried about rainy conditions while riding with the cardboard panniers but I got some Flex Seal spray .I will cover the outside that should be fine for a few riding seasons. Then with a garbage bag on the inside of the panniers should do the trick. Fingers crossed.

Have a look at the Hepco and Becker C-Bow luggage mounting system.
They do have hard cases in their panniers range so that will give you an idea of their mounting.

Also this DIY thread should get your interest: Fitting vintage panniers

Captain …thanks for the info on the H and B systems looks like they have three systems to choose from…and thanks for the thread on the Krauser Bags retro fit….that member did a fantastic job on attaching the bags…he is more skilled than I…the reasons I’m leaning to the Cravens is their flat surface for attachment and, bags are relatively thin…and the SW Motech system looks clean on the bike when the bags are off plus the attachment to the case I would have lots of room to move the system up down or left right, from what the pictures show on their web site…concerns are indicators, suspension travel and maybe passenger pegs…when I did my cardboard mock up the Craven dimensions fit pretty good on the bike and I know the SW System is designed for the R9T….its freezing here right now as it warms up a little I will get back in the garage and do some more measurements and tinkering…

Flex Seal is the best! I fixed my waterfall pond with it 4 years ago after Hurricane Irma and it held fast through Hurricane Ian a couple months ago.

You can fabricate your own brackets for the Craven bags just like I did for the fenders on my Rennesport Replica project. The Craven Comet bags are nice and seem to fit well on the 9T as far as size and aesthetics, they are fairly cheap and available also. I picked up four sets for the cost of shipping a while back, line them inside with some DIY truck bed liner stuff and they would be good to go.

And sysbag 10L plate adapter is my final choice. I have legends sw motech SLC but I want bigger bags. SW motech are warning about not overload more than 5kg each bag...so bigger heavy panniers not able to load so much luggage is not worthy

Really interested how you get on with the Craven/SW Motec side rack mounts. A combination I am also considering.

@KamanjeR9T can you weld? Have you got facilities for fabrication? If yes and yes then no problem. I made my own system in the style of ‘Shad 3P’ that’s a three point system to use shad hard luggage as no one made anything bespoke. Shad is also the main manufacturer of BMW std luggage and Seats too, I wanted OEM quality not any of the others.

It’s a prototype I’ve done. It’s not fool prove yet as it has side mist but your back stays clean and the suspension stays spotless!! It’s going to be a carbon fibre product when done although it’s metal and plastic currently as it’s still on trial.

Not sure yet. My problem is it’s not my only interest and it was time consuming to get the right look. I’m undecided wether to sell directly or through a well known accessory seller.
