Hello all,
I just got home from making my deposit. I'm #3 on my dealers list here in New York. I rode steady through my 20s and 30s but then into my 40s kids/ work/ other interests took center stage and I've been bike-less for about 6 years. I always knew that I would be back on a bike eventually. I've been poking around the last few months but nothing really clicked for me. Back in the day I mostly road sport bikes. Now I was looking for something a little easier on the old bones, but still have decent power, handling, and serious coolness factor. BMW nailed if for me, I knew right away that this was the one.

Congrats to you too!
$500. He was really cool about it. He asked what I wanted to leave and I suggested $500. It's fully refundable too if for some crazy reason I don't take the bike. I think having the deposits booked allows the dealers to push their allocations.

It does bring up an interesting question. If most dealers are like mine and taking refundable deposits is the demand number a bit inflated by people who are putting down a few hundred figuring I have nothing to loose?
I'm glad to hear that #3 on the list makes me pretty safe too, thanks!

Just because deposits are refundable i dont think it's a sign of inflated numbers, probably just their way to be as friendly to their potential customers as possible. a non-refundable deposit would have a lot of people looking the other way.

@Cager CONGRATS! Did they give you a sense of when you'd get it?

Welcome aboard Cager, congrats on the deposit. I do think part of the refundable deposit is BMW surveying interest in the bike. No one wants pent up demand and angry customers because they need to wait a year for their bike...

I doubt there are going to be many people pulling their deposits. I mean if you have initiative to go down to a dealer, sit down and ask questions about a bike that still hasen't been seen in public I would say you're pretty committed to your decision...

Thanks! He said that the factory might first get each dealer one bike as soon as January then start filling the balance of the orders. I should reasonable expect March and he did believe that they would cap production
That's perfect @Cager, that means you'll have it for spring!!! Are you getting super psyched or what!

Now you need to decide if you need to get new gear to go with it.. I know when i get a new bike I start thinking about boots, replacing my helmet, getting new gloves.. start fresh...

I'm very excited for you :)

Cherry Street you're probably right.

So if the dealers are only going to get say 5 bikes each, will they know not to take 8 deposits? Do you think the decision is already made to cap production numbers or will the ultimate demand dictate how many they make? I'd hate to be the guy down the list who gets told, "Es tut mir leid"

Have you guys seen this kind of extraordinary response to a new bike model before?

Usually 8 deposits means the 5 get allocated, and they order 3 more. But, the last 3 will have to wait.. so I'd suggest always asking (For anyone reading this!) which position you are in line and if you're in the first order or not.

Yeah man! I'm sure this Forum will keep us all on the boil through the winter!
Funny you should mention gear, of course I sneaked down to the garage last night after the family turned in and started going through my old gear. I guess my Snell 05 helmet should get retired for safety sake. . .

Thanks again for the kind words!

How did I know :)

Yeah, that's a few years old, I'd say get a new one.. not to mention the worn out inside, it's probably broken down and would make a better helmet to let a kid wear for fun in pictures (and NEVER ride in) than use again.

Good choice for a helmet though, protects the noggin'.

I also thought of it because this is a super stylish bike.. and it kind of deserves the stylish gear to go with it.

No doubt, Ruby makes gorgeous helmets.
I read up a bit and I found that the consensus says the polystyrene in the inside drys out over time and becomes hard. Not good and doesn't absorb the impact anymore. Here's some good info too,

Snell Foundation - Helmet FAQ

I've always worn full face helmets, but the open face models sure look cool on the NineT. Cool vs Safety - maybe that's a topic for another thread.

Great info on helmets.

I have always gone with full faced and snell helmets. I like how snell earns the safety ceritfication with a 9lb weight ;)
