Euro 5 Akrapovic Titanium headers

817 Views 21 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  K9F
I swore blind I was going to keep my R Nine T bone stock. Nevertheless I have been kicking round the idea of fitting a set of Euro 5 Akrapovic Titanium headers.

I contacted Nippy Normans as the Euro 4 ones part number AKP-E-B12E3 are quite significantly reduced in price but there was no mention of the Euro 5 ones part number AKP-E-B12E5. I received a curt response simply stating "We do not sell any headers for the later models. Perhaps try Performance Parts."

Performance Parts the price is almost 90% more than that of the Euro 4s. I am still undecided as these are a lot of money compared to the Euro 4. I quite like the offerings from Zard too and they are keenly priced as well, but no mention of Euro 5.

My main question is whatever direction I travel what do I do with the exhaust flap valve and servo, can these be simply removed without further ado? I am acutely aware that CanBus electronic systems can be very 'fickle' and like load equalizers needed for lighting there may be some interaction of the valve with an ECU somewhere and I don't want to start throwing codes.

Thank you and if anyone gets wind of any deals on Titanium headers for a Euro 5 please give me a shout.

Lots of money. Sound gaining is not warranted...Save your money.

I spent few money for this. For using only few times and get fun little while. Sound is warranted and it is cheap. Not legal but you only use few moments. Rest of time use orginal and legal ones.

……..and so it begins. Everybody here has gone through what you are just beginning to feel @K9F . Some more than others but everyone feels it. The original 9T in all its iterations has a silent beauty that’s unique to the class and style of the machine. We all recognize its unique appeal, combine that with the unexpected torque and agility and a simple test ride and you hooked. Like few other machines it also carry’s the reputation of Germanys best …BMW.
Very hard to find a more dependable less finicky big displacement motorcycle ……. BUT, sooner or later your personality starts to leak out and things begin to change. You realize the cornucopia of nice accessories available and you’re off to the races ……. Money flying out the window and your machine is looking better and better …….. the exhaust is the easiest and usually the first to go stuff. Every mod, every version, every method you will think about someone here has attempted so there’s plenty of references to guide you. The sky, the depth of your pockets and the local law are all that’s holding you back. The bike is pretty much bullet proof. The CanBus and electrical can be a bit tricky at times but plenty of advice available here from dozens of very bright fellas, but the mechanical is so easy to care for compared to many other brands….You’ll see …………. Have some fun. You’re only going to make it better when you make it your own ! StayUpOn2 ………………………………………. Blitz

Just so you know what you’re getting into, the euro4 Akra Ti headers are notorious for poor finish upon shipping (print and pen marks, water spots, and other general oddities that shouldn’t be present on an $1100 exhaust). Multiple RevZilla reviews reflect this, as well as more than a handful of forum posts and my own personal experience. I would really like to believe that this issue is only present on the Euro4 ones, but I’m sure the Euro5 will ship needing a little work. I’m happy with mine after taking some scour pads to them before installation, but would recommend exploring other headers (Unit Garage, maybe?) before settling on the Akra. It’s a sweet product once set up and ready to rock, but man would it be nice if I didn’t have to sweat over them for a couple hours to get it to look acceptable enough to mount.

Regardless, welcome to the rabbit hole of R nineT modification! Customization on these bikes is a blast.

+1 on the Unit Garage headers here. With the servo buddy, you won't have any error code issues, they have an excellent finish, and mine still look great after a year. The sound is also a good improvement, but not obnoxious.

Akra Ti headers are great. They improve the sound, save 2.8kg, and make the engine more free revving and generally sound/feel happier/less strained at higher rpm and they look amazing. As stated, you need to get some scotch brite pads of various grits and using those with WD40 give the headers a good clean and uniform buff up - probs 2hours of elbow grease before installation.

I prefered the look of the Akra curve out of the heads to the Unit Garage headers, and I also couldn't justify the huge price premium - i'd prefer to put in the 2 hours of prep work. Here are mine after about 18months and approx 14,000km.

It is only to get sound. Aesthetic for me is not wrong. Free panoramic view of rear wheel is also pretty. It is said Euro5 is less sound than euro4 or 3. I am not sure if expensive option for euro5 are able to get louder sound. Or At least if it will be woth. I am not sure but I think Buddy is not necessary if you mantein exhaust flap valve. Remove only final part exhaust is not problem. In my case (euro4) I am happy with original sound. For me it is not worth waste so much money in this kind of things. Only my opinion.

Thank you for all your very helpful advice. There is of course always those that have nothing constructive to contribute other than to 'pour scoff and scorn.'

BlitzSchnell your post struck a chord more than most and this is not a trap I want to go down yet again so for the time being, and based on everyone's advice and basic common sense I am shelving any ideas of modifications for the interim. It is indeed an addiction of making it your own and spending eye-watering amounts of money on the latest 'must haves' that I certainly 'don't need' at this juncture. Only a month in of ownership and I am enjoying immensely everything about the bike, mistakenly I thought it deserved lavishing a bit of money on it. I bought this bike primarily to scratch the itches my other couldn't and for bad weather. It is also quite nice going places quietly without drawing a crowd and being asked the same questions over and over. Once again thank you all for your sound advice it has put it into a much better perspective.

Another deciding factor is that my old Mini Cooper needs a new clutch as of yesterday. Higher priorities have made me curb my R Nine T aspirations.

@K9F You know what you want ..and by the finished look of you “Pooper” I have faith the 9T will end up looking even better than it does now …. I’d be proud as punch to ride either one. Well done Sir. When time and opportunity come together I’d love to see some video and sound bites of both machines. They are both head turners and crowd stoppers. BeWell Mate, ride tall in the saddle. ………… Blitz

As it happens I have also been considering the Akra Ti headers. I also contacted Nippy Norman as it was (at the time) not obvious that the one they were selling would only fit the euro 4 bikes. I think you need the link pipe to replace the flapper and as Spankey notes a servo buddy to prevent the obd light being triggered. I bought mine from MotoStorm as they had the best price at the time. I am very happy with both the sound and performance - Servo Buddy, Boss can, and Rapid Bike Smart.

I just removed the cables and left the motor in situ. No error codes and 50 quid saved.

That could work too, I have read elsewhere that if they are simply disconnect the cable the flight computer continues to seek the correct position for the flapper and will eventually throw a code.

Do not know if that is true or not since I used the SB.

Problem with that is you lose the benefit of shedding unnecessary weight.

If weight saving with the R Nine T is of concern you bought the wrong bike from the off.😉
