Exhaust Heat Wrap - Pros and Cons

Not a big fan of the chrome headers on the R9T.

Anybody here ever used heat wrap on boxer engine headers?

Thermo-Tec : Exhaust Insulating Header Wrap (Graphite Black)

Thought it might look neat with the classic style of the bike and all...

well if heat wrap is a bad solution maybe high temp paint to change the color?
you need a very good company to do this. I have a professional power coater here. the powercoat nearly everything... except headers.
High temperatures and paint do not really fit together...
I asked them 2 years ago when the headers of my GSA went from blue to yellow and green...
IMO it will be worth it to get some high heat paint on the exhaust, I just love how a black exhaust looks. Heat wrap can still look good to me if done right
Or even ceramic coat it might cost a bit more but worth it if heat is an issue.
I know powder coating, but never heard of ceramic coating.
But it looks great.
Does anybody know how much it would cost to ceramic coat the exhaust system ?
Heat wrap looks very cool - thanks for bringing it to my attention - it'll add visual depth and texture -

I'm going to let this thing get absolutely filthy anyway -
its also adds a bit of "vintageness" to it. which doesnt hurt.
Given the form and style of the headers... Would you recommend to do the wrapping with the headers mounted or dismounted...?

I am very lazy...
if you are lazy keep them on. its not impossible to wrap the headers with them installed. Itll just take some effort.

it will be easier with them off no doubt.

thats part of why i love it.
it serves a real purpose, looks good if done right and at times, vintage.
I love when the get the bluish hue, makes people think you know how to move quickly ;)
The headers are definitely stainless steel. Check out the press photos and the videos. The pipes are brown. Chrome blues, stainless turns brown. All recent boxers except the C use stainless.

One tip to get a nice bronze hue. Before the headers get hot even once, wipe down the pipes carefully with disc brake cleaner. On my last boxer, the dealer or I missed a spot and whatever was on there turned dark brown.

For those who are new to the marque, pipe coloring is part of the charm of the boxer. You don't cover, use Blu Away, or Simichrome.

I'd say the best is to dismount the headers before wrapping but if you are lazy just wrap it where it lies :D

... hello Street, curious to see what you mean by 'nice bronze hue' ...

I'm all for hue, hue is great! hue is soooo desirable! and BRONZE hue even more :D:D ;)

... and if it saves me $$$ plus achieving a good visual effect, I wont mind crawling around on the floor at the BMW dealership, pulling out my bottle of disk brake cleaner and wiping down the pipes .... in front of all those R9T admirers who didn't put down a deposit and wanna catch a glimpse of that all-round favoured bike .... and can't believe their eyes seeing this madman destroying her pipes in the first minutes :eek::eek:

... however, I've never heard of anyone doing that - and can't even imagine whatever thought process went through the mind of the first guy who ever wiped his NEW pipes down with disk brake cleaner? What, even before he started up the bike for his first 1000kms? was it like ... hm, hm, let's see - how can I create a different kind of anodising effect on my stainless pipes?

maybe there's a photo in your collection to show off that desirable bronze hue?
