If you watch this official BMW video on the NineT you'll see how the guys are unscrewing a round restrictor (?) from the standard exhaust.

I wonder if this allows some sound modification of the stock exhaust similar to some aftermarkets pipes for H-D's?

some stills from that video showing the round piece off and how the guy puts it back on. It looks like the round piece is held on by the 6 surrounding bolts and a large ring?

Nice stills :):):cool::cool:
very good close up , that's the washer I was talking about.
In some aftermarket exhausts it's also possible to "remove the dB-killer".

Don't get your expectations to high , it will make a difference in tone for sure. Without the washers or roundels the sound will be slightly deeper toned:cool:

Gents,
Having seen the bike first hand I can confirm that the standard dual exhaust is customisable, the tips are held in by 6 tamper proof torx screws, should not be too difficult to get around with the correct tools, the cans will essentially be straight through, the cat is in the mid section and it is the headers on this set up which are quite restrictive, get a set of Remus headers to release a fair bit of extra poke, these also take the cat out of the mid section. The fuelling is lean standard so doing this will require the mixture to be richened up somewhat to avoid long term damage with excessive heat etc, on a basic level a booster plug helps or the power commander v but to get best results the ecu will need to be flashed and there are some crazy benefits to this circa 20% increase in power and torque as well as a 5-8% increase in fuel economy! this all completely safe as the motor is in a low state of tune standard to cater for worldwide emissions and fuel grades etc, most importantly, after a re flash the motor should have an almost spot on AFR which is much more beneficial for performance AND longevity than even the standard factory tune.

Tamper proof torx screws?!?!? WTF?!?! You can buy a cheap set of torx bits anywhere - just because they are torx doesn't make them tamper proof any more so than any SAE or Metric nut or bolt...

So I know of the plug or the commander, but how or who can reset the ECU to the right specs?
I had a full Remus exhaust on my GSA and for sure there was whole lot more punch and sound but my riding buddies hated following me now because it started smelling pretty bad. So I went back to the standard header with the Remus can in the back which lost some power and sound again but at least the sound was still a little bit better than stock and it ran "clean" again.
Would the plug help in that case, or how can I get the ECU reset?

Gents,
... but to get best results the ecu will need to be flashed ...Ant.
hi Ant, thanks for the info.:)

Now, where can I get a pound of ecu-flash from again ....? Is that in liquid form, e.g. add it to the fuel, or does this type have to be installed internally to assist the expunge cycle when in a state of unrest? Whilst no stranger to the flux - no-flux concept, the ecu-flash hasn't made an appearance this far South.

Maybe it'd be easier if I simply borrow yours?

110 horses will do it for me on a cruiser, I guess.

Sound will be a different story. I'll wait and see how the upswept Akra sounds on her.

Ants thoughts are spot on with a re flash ;)
Your 110bhp is at the crank on a standard 9T not at the wheel ,and if you get a good one you'll be lucky to have 92 bhp on a rolling road from the rear wheel  also the torque will be less than quoted also
The correct a/f should be nearer to 14-00 for perfect running and fuelling ,the stock bike will be way out and nearer to 19-00 a/f for factory emission regs
You can have your standard bikes ECU flashed without any changes by BMW when looking at your ECU for servicing or changes / updates by a great guy called Geoff at Hilltop motorcycles Leicestershire .
Once flashed you'll get a bike set up with the true power an torque you've paid for but at the rear wheel ,with better power ,more torque ,excellent fuelling and a twin cam engine that goes like f*** :D
It's a waste of money spending hundreds of £ $ € on extra pipes / filters IMHO, when for an ECU flash that's been created an proven to work without all of the branded extras fitted ,your bike will run far better and to its true intention ;)
I had my last twin cam flashed and it was excellent ,my stock figures were 91 bhp at the rear with 68 tourqes on the rolling road,A/F 18-00:eek:
After a set up and flash my figures were 108 bhp at the wheel an 87 tourqes A/F 13-.06 ;):D
With a proper set up your on the power much sooner, with smooth gearing and better fuel consumption to ,all without wasting money chasing 5-7 bhp on pipes and filters or power commanders:rolleyes:
Each to their own but I know where my will be heading after 2000 miles :D
This flash cannot be traced by BMW in any shape or form either as it's encrypted
Without trace :D no warranty issues ;):D

Twhalen, spot on with the raised stud on the torx bolts, that is exactly why they are mildly tamper proof!
Bose, again spot on with the flash theory, it was indeed hilltop that I was eluding to with the flash work, it is definitely the way to go for big, SAFE, gains, chasing horse power is useless if you are running the machine too lean and burning out intake valves etc! An AFR of around 13:1 is considered optimal for power and longevity of engine components, anything above 14:1 is starting to get lean, figures of 18:1/19:1 sound utterly horrendous and I would not want to be subjecting my motor to that long term.
There is plenty of stuff on Internet forums about ECU flashing and I can completely understand why people get nervous about it however, I have first hand experience of it being used on my XTZ1200 super tenere and it made a good motor simply sublime! It is after all how many manufacturers want their engines to be but they have to reign them back for emissions regs and differing fuel grades available around the world.
Apologies for the thread drift, in a word, if you want to modify the standard dual exhaust then yes you can, with the right tools!

I found another cheap way to modify the exhaust on any R bike with the flapper valve installed:
Flapper Eliminator R1200 GS - Adventure 8166209 | BMW Wunderlich America

That should make a nice subtle difference. Has anyone tried this on their other R bikes?
Why bother, just remove the cables from your flap and the butterfly will be wide open an stay wide open ;) the valves there to give more noise only at throttle positions ,not any power gains without the valve  don't waist your funds :)
