Hey Guys, first post. I've searched around but can't find anything related to my size. I might be too big for the bike but that hasn't stopped me yet. I love the darn thing.

2021 9T Roadster.

I want to upgrade the suspension. Mainly the rear feels pretty bad. I weigh 340lbs, im 6,4 so I'm a big guy. Is there any suspension parts that you think would work for me? I'm a newb.

Thanks!

You are not alone. :LOL:

I'm a big guy, shorter than you but still north of 300#. (Dropped 50 last year but unfortunately gained quite a bit back the last several months.) Last summer I swapped out my R9T Pure's OEM fork springs for a stiffer set of RaceTech springs, and bought a basic TFX rear shock with a spring to match my weight. The bike handles much, much better now.

There are a few options for fork internals, and several options for rear shocks. I have to admit I'm not too knowledgeable about fork internals on the "classic" R9T and its inverted fork. Do some research here on the forum and you'll likely come across folks who have upgraded to Ohlins, Wilbers, RaceTech, TFX, Hyperpro, and a few other brands. My new setup was pretty cost-effective, but it's easy to spend more and get something better. My upgrades suit my needs for now.

As for the size of the bike itself, you might end up wanting bar risers and/or a footpeg lowering kit. There are some good options there, too.

By the way, when you have a moment I'd suggest creating an introductory post in the new member section. ;)

@bmwsavant, welcome to the board.

I'm only 5'11" and feel like the Classic is small, maybe you would want to consider a Scrambler/Urban and change the suspension to make it taller. I worked with Ted Porter at Beemershop, link below, on my suspension, highly recommend calling them before you buy to have a conversation about your expectations and cost.

+1 on working with Ted Porter @ Beemershop. I guess I'm a bit of a light-weight compared to you, but I too wanted better suspension on my 2021 Pure. I went with a TFX 142 rear shock which are made to your weight and riding specs. As mentioned by TImC, there really isn't a single, magic step in getting your bike setup to your satisfaction. A new rear shock will probably lead to doing something about the front suspension, then that will lead to experimenting with aftermarket seats, bar risers, and so on. One thing leads to another, but all the separate things working in combination will eventually add up to a better ride. I hear you when you say you "just love the thing", so have fun with it and enjoy the bike for what it is. It will never be a great racer, an off-roader, or a long-distance tourer in my opinion (although you can dress it up and make it look like whatever you want), but for around town or on country back roads, it's a winner for me. Yes, introduce yourself and then post some bike pics. :)

Welcome @bmwsavant
Husky rider here too. Bar risers and lowering kit is a must to keep you from feeling all balled up. Quick fix that worked for me is a sheepskin and a bead rider. It it an instant add of almost an inch and is a good cure for monkey butt. I run ohlins on my standard with no complaints. Im 270 at the moment.
Happy riding.
Reach out if you make it to Virginia.

Same here -- I ordered my TFX from Beemershop, and it was set up for my weight and riding style, and I heartily recommend Ted Porter's shop. They pretty much nailed the setup, though after a few hundred miles I did adjust the rebound damping a couple clicks. I was getting a little "boing-ing" from the rear shock coming off some bumps and pavement undulations, and the adjustment fixed it. I'm very happy with that basic TFX shock.

Check out the race tech suspension site, just enter your details and it provides spring rate suggestions. I'm a mere 200 or less and the stock spring just makes it, or we could adjust gravity.

Stop it, you all, with your birth weight confessions. HA! HA! Next thing, you peps will be posting your zodiac signs. Yes, please eat healthy and try to lose weight, if your doctor advises. On topic, I don't think a R9T is the right bike for "Husky" folks.

The OP, @bmwsavant has asked that one and only question, and then left the forum 4 weeks later… That was a year ago.
