OMG that could have happened to any of us! I need to go check my bike. Thanks for the heads up.

I would call BMW and as about the warranty too.

Checked mine, whilst not damaged had similar kink and looked like it could have caught as well

Thanks for the heads up

The cable is repaired under warranty, no cost.:goodjob:
Probable cause: too much bent, combined with freezing temperatures.
As a replacement motorcycle during the repair, I got a scrambler.

Good to know it was sorted dxamet.

Like others I've checked mine, and while there is a slight kink in it, nothing has split yet.

The spiral binding is a cracking idea, so will deffo get some of that as a preventative measure.......so many thanks for bringing the situation to our collective attention.
Agree, spiral binding will be going on my bike too! Best hobble out to the garage and give mine the once-over as well. :)
Hi,

There is a small part (12517803874) sold by BMW Motorrad to prevent that damage.

Regards,
Marco

@masas That would work, but spiral wrap is easier to install as you don't have to get spiral wrap over the electrical plugs or cut the loom...

That tube stuff is good if you are repairing broken wires or building a look section from scratch.
To my understanding all bikes manufactured as of 2016 have a protective cover over the wire to prevent this.

Hi @BaldyDave,
This BMW part is very easy to install, I already done it in my own R nineT. The "tube" is open thru length, very easy, you don't need to disassemble any part.

Best Regards,
Marco

How to know if mine is protected?

I stand corrected, Marco. My apologies. :)

My wires are crimped but not broken yet. :|

If I take my bike to the dealership to have that fixed they will also want to fix my taillights. :| (The U.S. bikes have been recalled to have the taillight/turn signal lights extended and I don't want the taillights extended.)

But then they will have to put my Öhlins rear shock on - because I can't do it - so they will change the taillight/turn signals anyway. :| But they can remove that stupid canister. :)

No big deal. The bike isn't going anywhere for at least another month. :(

After checking the entire bike, to prepare it for the next riding season, I figured giving some extra attention to the problems I read on this forum.
The bike was completely fine, but coming to one of the last point of my list, the cable to the dashboard, I found out it sadly has started to rip as well.

I am in the last months of my warranty period. Do you guys think they will fix the cable under warranty, even though my dials are still working and it hasn't completely broken yet?

After the 'heads-up' of this thread, I went on ebay and bought five 0.5 metre lengths of spiral binding in various diameters. Obviously I don't need all the sizes to protect the dash wires, but as the whole lot only cost £7.21 to my door, I got the other larger sizes to go into stock for if/when I may need some for other applications.

I was about to do the same, but am apparently too late already.

***EDIT***
I'd certainly expect this to be a warranty job, and see no reason why your dealer won't repair the loom.

Oh and I have also got the outer loom sheath splitting. Just been out to the garage and looked. No apparent damage to inner wires so will fit some spiral wrap and phone the dealer on Monday. My warranty has expired 6 months ago but nothing I can't fix myself for a couple of pounds if BMW don't want play ball. I will direct the manager to this thread though! lol ;)
I ordered the cover. Still waiting. :(

Repair of the instrument cluster AND headlight wiring loom

Inspired by @masas, I decided to use an alternative to the BMW split tube wiring conduit to repair the split in the instrument cluster wiring loom.

I think the standard instrument wiring loom sheathing is really poor design by BMW, the plastic sheathing isn't very flexible and is put in an area which is flexing much of the time. No wonder a good few of us have seen the sheathing split. Until I can speak to the manager at my local dealership I've affected a repair. Unless the official repair will be any better than this (I suspect not) it'll stay on the bike.

Here is what I found when I inspected my bike:

The wires inside the sheath appear undamaged, if they had been I wouldn't have progressed any further and would have contacted the dealer and try to get a good-will warranty repair done as this should never happen to a bike this new with under 3000 miles on the clock. As it was there was nothing to lose by continuing.

I bought a bunch of 1m long pieces of flexible conduit (with the split running down the length) for less than £5 delivered...

Cut a piece to size and installed it on the bike. I left the damaged sheathing on the bike and the new conduit just slipped on over the top of it. A nice tight fit and I can't see this new conduit coming off easily.

I found it easier to unbolt the headlight (2 bolts, under a minute to do) and rest it on the front mudguard. This gave me lots of room for the install.

I noticed that the headlight loom had the same stock sheathing on it as the instrument cluster, and sure enough when I inspected it, the sheath had crimped and I reckon wasn't long from failing too! Not good! Anyway since I'd stacks of flexible conduit, I fixed that too. :)

I would recommend that everyone checks the headlight wiring as well, as you don't want this to fail in the middle of the night!!!
