No can bus ?

I've read that BMW modified the electric circuit so third party accessories could be easily installed.
Does this mean there's non can bus ?

Good question, I can't tell from the online docs on it.

For those that aren't aware of how the BMW can bus works (if youre on a BMW motorcycle forum, you probably do, but just in case!)

"Single Wire System and CAN bus
The BMW Motorrad Single Wire System (SWS) is an innovative, electronic vehicle wiring system for motorcycles. The data exchange is affected by means of CAN bus technology (Controller Area Network) via a single connection (thus the term Single Wire System), although in practice it is designed as a dual channel system. This vehicle electrical system offers a considerably larger range of functions compared to conventional systems in motorcycles, providing a significant reduction in wiring. Other advantages of this intelligent motorcycle electrical system are weight reduction in the wiring harness, increased functional reliability and full diagnosis capacity."

From what I'm reading, the CAN bus stays for engine management but is separated from chassis electronics for ease of modification. Sounds like a win win to me.
Got the answer -- from BMW:

"Here is the information I have . Yes it should be a canbus system. https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/pressclub/p/us/pressDetail.html?title=the-new-bmw-r-ninet&outputChannelId=9&id=T0150745EN_US&left_menu_item=node__8300"
personally as someone who likes to switch up things on their motorcycle. canbus is hella annoying.
Wiring split

Engine management can bus ,then front light / rear can be adapted for customisation that dosnt affect the canbus system = win win for changes at both ends :D
BMW will never make another bike without a CAN bus or some equivalent... even though the nineT will have far less electronics

Of course I say that even though they are putting TUBED tires on this bike ......:p
as long as the lighting isn't wired into the canbus.

Amen to that
they begin the FARKLING process on my '14 GS tomorrow...
the CAN bus will be a big issue with what I have going on that bike, for sure

what is the FARKLING process?
farkles are all those aftermarket accessories we add to our bikes
so... the "farkling process" is the installation of those items
a made-up word...

Sitting here looking at my new (yesterday) NineT and wondering where to even put the Garmin!

Asked my dealer about installing a headlight modulator and taillight pulser and he said as soon as he asked in the service area, their eyes rolled up and they al said , "No way...can bus".
+1 on direct to battery.
With an in-line fuse installed. I fried more than one mount before I understood why its needed...

Oh yes! Inline fuse most definitely.
The battery on my RT looks like I've tied a string of firecrackers to it from all the fuses! :D
