Oil Temperature Gauge on OEM display

24744 Views 65 Replies 29 Participants Last post by  roadrunner
I seems the oil temperature readout has been removed from the instrument display. I want to add a gauge, just for my peace of mind. Since most other R models have this incorporated in the stock instrument, I presume I can get a stock sender unit that will go in some existing fitting on the engine? Any one know where it is located? Then I just have to find a display that will blend in with the existing instruments. Or just replace everything with the incredible Motogadget stuff!

Thanks for any info.

You don't really need a temp gauge because it doesn't get hot? I guess you don't need oil pressure or charging system warnings either. After all, it's a BMW! Next we won't really need a warranty.
You will have beautiful red-hot bends if you let a boxer run 15 mins in your garage, for sure. But I said, as long as it's in motion you will hardly ride it too hot. Under normal circumstances the air-cooling or how the exact expression is, airflow cooling is sufficient to keep the engine in a good operating temperature range. Only exception perhaps if you live in Death Valley.
On the other hand, can you tell me what you see on the oil-temp gauge? What do 4 bars tell you? And what do you know more when you see 6 bars? That the engine oil is 2 bars hotter? Did you ever think about why it doesn’t get hotter than 6 bars?
Oil pressure is much more interesting. The two valve R 100 RS had an oil pressure gauge, not to mix up with a little red lamp, that begins to glow, when the oil pressure drops under a certain value.
I stick on it: An oil temp gauge (with bars, not with degrees) and tank gauge are not necessary to survive...

Can someone post a pic of oiltemp in bars? This is completely wacko:confused::eek: (P1*V1):T1=(P2*V2):T2 and V1=V2 ; T2=(P1*V1):p2
Please fill in the numbers and see what you get ( T in absolute :D )
That's for one, secondly the oil viscosity will alter with the temp going up and pressure will drop instead of increasing. The only logic in the quote and to remember by all; if the red light activates on oil pressure STOP ASAP. This is no levelswitch but an oilpressureswitch saying engine has no/ to little lubrification.
Thirdly but that's just IMO and not science: with my 5 former GS+GSA's I could tell when to fill oil in between 2 inspections just by the sound of the engine. One of them consumed 1 liter per 2500 k :(

Exactly, I also can hear when Elsa is thirsty :)

Here's a pic from the oil gauge (the 4 bars on the left side), sorry... a little wiggly

oh oh oh shame shame :eek::eek: on me.
I never had an airhead with the "extra computer" functions so I thought that in those versions the oiltemp was visualised in BAR (psi) , hence the confusion:(

Pretty cool!
However not easy to read that gauge, nor would it be that accurate IMO. Also provides no security to the oil cap.

... interesting ... but that eBay item number is of no use at all, please post the web address (copy from your browser bar) ... thanks
:)
So who is going to take the plunge first to try them out? ;)

I've ordered from this seller before for a flapper eliminator and a set of titanium exhaust tips. He's in Taiwan, and has been very reliable. I ordered a temp gauge. You'll have to add a note to choose which color you want.
I also placed an order with this seller for the temperature gauge in ebay and prepaid it. It took about 4 weeks to arrive here in Germany from China and it finally passed German customs/tax. Communication with the seller was good. Installation is easy.

I like the old school look of the gauge and it perfectly fits my black valve covers...see my gallery.

Though, there are two downsides. You can take off the gauge without any tools and I am not sure if the temperature is correct...but the look is nice

Just wondering what will happen if the bike drops and the temp gauge is sheared off? Since it seems to stick out a fair bit

I guess it wont't be sheared off as it is on top of the valve cover. But if it drops you have other things to repair than the gauge.

I was thinking more along the lines if it shears off, and now there is nothing to cover the hole. Bike would not be rideable without having engine oil shooting out.

Other things to repair is not an issue....anyway just a hypothetical thought.

I have one of these , I have just got my new replacement R9T after a big crash , Bike written off both cylinders scrapped one side the valve cover distorted so oil leaked from the gap where the gasket should be sealing ! oil temp gauge not even scratched !
Also I have kept the original filler cap in the "tool pouch"
As for the "oil security" issue you have a paranoia problem !
I just received mine this morning. Can't wait to fit it on. Hopefully no scumbags will steal it as there is no way of locking the unit.
Gs-911

IIRC:
The computer must have a sensor somewhere because a GS-911 shows oil temp.
