I take delivery in a few days...snow permitting (maybe a foot tomorrow here in MD). There are three charges from my dealer that kind of irk me. Like to get some feedback on what your dealers are charging you.

1.) On top of BMW's $395 freights charge, which I guess is Germany to USA, my dealer is charging me $150 freight from NY to Baltimore. Anybody paying additional freight from port to dealer?

2.) $395 Prep and assembly. How many dealers charge for that?

3.) $129 document preparation. What exactly does the dealership pay these folks to do...just sell?

As an aside, I bought the aluminum tail piece with its backrest piece. Retails for $664 which I thought was a tad high, but I have to have it.

I have'nt picked up my bike yet, but it looks like my dealer is charging $495 for shipping ($100 more than normal), and $164 for documentation (even though I'm registering it in a different state). Hopefully I won't be surprised by hidden charges.

My destination fee is $495, which seems pretty par for delivery in the midwest. No other special charges, other than $1077.65 sales tax. Oh wait, yes there is one. $25 for title fee. With our sales tax, the out the door price is $16,498.15. BTW, this morning, one guy offered them $1000 over list for MY bike. He was a good customer, a repeat buyer. Apparently, he knows me. They won't tell me who it was, they said I will find out soon enough LOL.

mine is charging the same handling fee amount. something i've not seen invoiced before with my previous vehicles.

anyone in the US getting the bike minus this fee?

seems like the prep and setup should be included in the cost of the bike as finished and ready-to-go product given that it's not possible to have the biked drop-shipped to one's front door without going through a dealer.

i'll pay it of course… because i want the bike, this week, after waiting six months already. but i'll say this: it seems like a discretionary way to gouge a few extra bucks from the sale of a hot item, and i think it sucks given that i already forfeited my bargaining power when i put down a deposit months ago, without being told how much the bike would cost, when it would arrive or how many would be available...

if have it wrong and these fees are legit, feel free to set me straight, internet motorcycling forum...

( $17,500 out the door. no extras. should be taking delivery by saturday. )

i'll answer my own question for other's benefit regarding the handling fees since i can't seem to edit my post:

the dealer explained that destination fees get the bike to NY and from there, it's the dealer's/prospective buyer's cost. these can vary. some dealers choose to absorb the cost, some choose to pass them on. all standard. and again, it's my choice to accept or decline. so there.

My dealer is squeezing out every dime he can on this deal. $500 transportation, $100 documentation fee, and an uncrating fee to be determined.
I couldn't get a fixed price when I ordered the bike in October. Now , it seems that both other customers and dealers want my bike.

At least he didn't jam me with an additional dealer profit fee of about $2000 like Harley was doing a few years ago.

Don't know what your tax rate is there in CA, but unless it's about 3x what we have in Ohio, I'd say that's not right. I paid $16,240 out the door.

yeah, tax rate is high... $1425, plus $400 handling, plus $250 DMV fees.

judging from past purchases, the minute i get on the bike, i won't remember or care what i paid... even if i did.

BTW, I popped for an extra, I wasn't sure was so necessary, but did so anyway. I purchased a wheel and tire warranty for 5 years. Tire damage, wheel damage, they replace it with BMW OEM wheels & or tires for free, no deductible. We have a lot of terrible roads here, and one chuck hole could pay for itself, so I opted for it. Normally don't pay for anything extra, but it actually seemed like a decent idea to me. Reminded me of two bent wheels and two blasted out tires on my 530 a couple years ago, and the cost to repair those.

my dealer also charges a prep fee of $395. Can't get around it with them, but for me calling about the bike yesterday, it arriving today, financing completed with BMW, I'm not going to try and find another dealer to save this small amount of cash. In the grand scheme of things, when rolled up into your loan, it's an extra dollar or two each month.

I'm in Los Angeles, $18,220 out the door with the upgraded 9T seat (with logo) and aluminum tail piece. They told me it takes two months to get the tail piece but they happen to have one. Various fees, $495 plus this, plus that, whatever....24 people on the list behind be. All the dealers do it with slight variations. The critics of the bike (who don't own one) write the bike is way overpriced, your paying for a BMW emblem. I'm here to report that he bike is under priced. If the bike was 22k out the door we would all pay it. But all the numbers are moot. I was attracted to the bike by the style of it. The **** thing is beautiful. I've got 425 miles on mine. Everywhere I go people come up to me and admire the bike. I don't care so much about that, I don't need my taste in anything reinforced, but I have to admit it's kinda nice. So to get to the point, forget the $$, this is not a work vehicle or something for the wife and kids. This is plain enjoyment for you. Can't put a price on the few days we have gliding down the road. The bike is killer in every way (except a missing gas gauge) and it's performing better and better as it's breaking in.

Enjoy.
