Preventative maintenance to alleviate R NineT common issues?

I've been reading the forum a little bit and I see people mentioning that the engine burns oil, but what are some other common issues or problems you can expect on the BMW R NineT? I've had mine for a few months now and I want to prepare as well as do preventative maintenance over winter.

I've had my 2020 R9T Pure over a year now and have put 12,000 miles on it. I've also been an avid forum member here since buying the bike. Both my personal experience and my knowledge from reading tons of posts leads me to believe there are no common issues or problems with these bikes. Yes, some bikes use a little oil, especially in the first 10,000 miles or so. Mine has, for example, but it's a negligible amount. Check your oil every week or two and top off if necessary. Otherwise, I just haven't experienced or read about any problems common to the R9T and its variants.

Having said that, there are some fairly common gripes, suspension being one of them. But in my mind these aren't "problems," and they aren't universal, as some people are fine with the bike as-is. And the parts they don't like, they mod, like I did with my suspension, mirrors (added extenders), and the stock seat (swapped for a Sargent).

By the way, when you have a moment it would be great if you wrote an introductory post in the forum's new member section! ;)

The older models had a problem with the wiring loom to the headlights and speedo. The wires would rub when the steering moved and would eventually break and fail. Apparently this was fixed by BMW adding a plastic corrugated sheath over the wires (not sure what model years got the fix), and I don't know how well the plastic sheath works for long term. I have a 2018 model and haven't really seen any wiring issues with it, yet. But I do see some of the shortcoming of how they've fed wires around the bike.

I have to admit though that for the price, there's a lot of cheaper type of components littered all around this bike. Ie. plastics, switches, suspension etc. BMW have definitely tried to squeeze every penny of profit from this bike. It's the only real thing that irks me about it.

So far though, knock on wood, I haven't had anything to write home about in terms of problems. I've only had to do simple fluid flushes each year. Bike has been riding smooth from day 1. I store my bike for winter and in the spring just do a quick look over for rust or anything else that sticks out like visibly frayed wires etc.

BMW has a well earned reputation. I’ve had 14 motorcycles along the way and this machine is easily the easiest maintenance machine I’ve encountered. If you ever get the opportunity to attend a large BMW Rally .. GO .. After speaking with numerous Rally participants my interest in the boxer, both air head and later air/oil engine began. I’ve owned my 9T for six years now and have zero complaints. I know there are areas of improvement here and there but pound for pound at 500, torque and horse power, dollar for dollar …along with dependability, I’d say I made the right choice. Every time I mount up I get that same feeling, every time I pull up next to another motorcycle, any motorcycle I get that feeling … I’m riding a beautiful machine, a rolling piece of art with thunder, and I’m sitting on it. I like bikes, I’ve had more comfortable rides, much faster ones, but somehow this bike is so much more classy and unusual and for a boxer …She’s just Beautiful. Classic Beauty for those who love the era. Best decision I’ve made in choosing the right bike. I don’t think for the money you could buy better. There just isn't anything to anticipate. Keep the maintenance schedule and watch the odometer build. I’ve seen a dozen older BMW’s with five-hundred-thousand miles on them and plenty still in the tank… I can easily give two 👍👍 …..Blitz

Awesome to hear, thanks for the response! I've also posted my intro in the newbie section now!

Appreciate info on the wiring. I have the earlier model, so I'll keep an eye on that and make sure nothing is rubbing or add shielding. I think BMW got away with cheaper parts because.. well, it looks so cool!

Inspiring! Mine is the early model and only has 2000 miles (I put 800 on myself this summer) and I'm loving every mile (except for sore bum on long rides).
