Maybe this is a question for those of us in the States, but I have seen conflicting information on what documents to always have while riding (i.e. registration, proof of insurance) and then also where to keep them. Do y'all keep them in a pocket while you ride in case you get stopped and need them, or do you keep them on the bike? The only place that I could find on the bike was in a ziplock bag under the pillion seat but even that was so small it was pushing it to get them to fit.

Thanks!

I am pretty slack with carrying my registration on the bike. But I tend to do is take a picture of it my registration, license and insurance information.
Also, a tip when traveling is to take a picture of all the pertinent identification and documents you need. Send them to yourself in an email just in case you lose your phone.

I make a photocopy of my registration and insurance card onto one sheet of paper, then fold it and keep in my inner pocket of each of my riding jackets. This is only because the R9T doesn't have a key lock to release the seat. I usually keep under the seat in a zip lock bag on all my other old bikes.

I am thinking about getting the rear seat hump, it has stowaway compartment that's handy.

I bring a tankbag with the reggo in it, you dont have to carry proof of insurance it is centrally recorded, unless you go aborad then is is handy to have the european green card with you, all go in the zipped lid pocket of the tank bag

Thanks for all the responses! I like the idea of taking a picture of all the documents and having them on my phone, but I wasn't sure about all of the different states laws on having documents over the phone versus in person.

The only thing I don’t like about that idea is the scenario that the cop will then have to take my phone into his car for his little procedure. (Traffic stops work a lot different in the US than elsewhere)

“No, Sir”? Good luck with that.

I have that seat hump, its pretty, but I’d really think twice about storing anything there that I’d have to access frequently:
the flimsy locking mechanism has been named “worst thing ever designed by BMW” since it breaks All.The.Time.
If you do, buy 10 of the stupid metal brackets at your dealership, just to have a few…

… and then I wonder: Is it really that much difficult to pull out your wallet that includes a tiny sheet of paper next to your stack of bills, instead of finding the bolt (also see The Seat Bolt Thread), unscrewing either the seat or the rear hump right in front of the officer, all that next to traffic on the road etc. Really?!?

My state doesn't recognize digital copies of the insurance. Paper must be carries, and I ride different bikes and wear different gear so am not thrilled carrying multiple copies in multiple pockets. My wallet is already fat. I carry the pertinent documents on the bike under the seat. They can wait for me to get the seat off if they find it important enough.

I keep them in a zip lock bag next to the Rider's Manual in a Sargent seat hump. Or under the seat on my other bike. Under lock and key in either case.

In a pinch (if insurance card shows an old date but I know I'm actually current), I can go to my insurance company's website online with my phone and access the current card - but this is relying on the officer to be patient enough, and also relying on cell service. Plus not every state accepts electronic versions, so every 6 months I try to update the insurance card on the bike so that I have both that and registration in paper form, together.

Don't like the jacket idea myself because (a) different jackets for different conditions and you might leave home with the "wrong" jacket, and (b) jackets can be left behind, or stolen, or things taken out of them, or stuff can slip out while you're rummaging through your pockets, etc...

On your person … in your wallet … go to your local photo-copy store and have every four pages reduced by 50% so 4 pages will fit on a single sheet of paper printed both sides … and … at 50% will still be completely legible .. (8 1/2” X 11”) …. and on paper too …… Blitz

I use the seat hump for docs. Another option for you that I used to use is to keep it in your helmet tucked behind a piece of the inner protection material. I put my docs in a very small flat plastic bag. Think of the small platic bags that you get at Home Depot or Lowes to put nuts, bolts or screws in.

I have a little black Brooks leather container strapped to the frame by my knee for the bare-bones OEM tool roll, and keep my registration in there. My state allows for digital proof of insurance, so thats on the phone.

Or I keep an additional copy (copies) in my top case. Scanned the registration at work and printed it out in color, you can't tell the difference, or at least I doubt a cop would be able to tell on the side of a road (but maybe idk). I think I also have copies in my jackets liner pockets too.

Possibilities are endless.

Just spray it with leather conditioner whenever I wash the bike. It's pretty much perfect for the little poser tool roll.
