Hi Guys,

I wrote today to the sales team in Germany:
I am very interested in the BMW R nine T delivered to Tanzania where I will live for the next years. I can make available all documents requested on your website. I would be interested in delivery timing and price including shipping. Importation can be done by my usual clearing agent
Thanks for your reply

I will keep you all in the loop although even if they offer to ship as soon as possible I would not know what extra's to order yet.

Reply from international sales Germany

It looks that it will work out for next year also in Africa.

" Thank you for your interest on the new BMW RnineT. My name is Anne-Marie Gross and I am working at BMW Motorrad in the special sales department.
This model is already communicated but please note that the market launch is programmed for March 2014.

As you might notice we do not have a dealer in Tanzania so we will unfortunately not be able to deliver the bike directly in your country. To offer the best service possible, I would recommend you to buy your bike in Kenya where we have an official importer. Michael de Souza, our motorcycle manager, will be pleased to take of your request and I am sure you will be able to find the best solution together in terms of delivery.
Please find below his contact data: "

And Kenya replied: " Dear Banks,

Thank you for your mail.

I will get back to you shortly with the information as requested, and look forward to being of service to you.

The R nine T is a very nice bike, and I am very excited about getting one into East Africa.

Have a great weekend !

Thanks and kind regards,

Michael de Souza

first things first, @gerry that is one of the best signatures I've ever seen LOL

Second, welcome aboard Banks. Great to see BMW handling your requests with a fair degree of speed and transparency. What are you doing in Tanzania? My niece went down there a few years ago to build a well or a library or something....

what do you do in Tanzania

Hi Cherry street. Got a 4 year contract for an International organisation in Dar es Salaam on logistics.
What I want to do is drive around Southern Africa and visit Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, etc and see most of Tanzania from a bike. If I take the good roads I can do all on a R Nine T. I also looked at the F 800 GS Adventure and that one would be better for bad roads. But considering that they priced both in the same range I will do more km on the R nine T and like the R nine T far more as a machine. Also looked at KTM 690 R which could still be a good alternative for African rides but this R nine T is something so nice to have and ride that it is not all rational calculated conditions and a logic result.

Before the advent of 'adventure bikes' folk used 'ordinary' road bikes for travel all over the world. A NineT with dual purpose tyres would cope as well as a GS on most unpaved African roads, in some instances better due to lower seat height. My thoughts also take into account the first GS's which were really only cosmetically enhanced street bikes anyway.

I'm drunk so forgive me if I'm too blunt: wait for 4 more years to order the RnineT

Dear Tracteur

Aawtch, that really hurts:rolleyes:
But then again, being sober, I don't change my opinion. You follow your heart & I understand it all too well. Only concerned about the balance advantage/disatvantage of your choice.
Only making fun, I apologize if you take it badly which was not my intention. And you do not have to change your opinion at all. True buying a new bike is a balancing act between a lot of factors. My principle argument for going for the R nine T is emotional. The rest I have to fill in if I can get my hands on one. All the best to you.

No prob, not offended ( emoticon said it all  ), just being honest and hopefully polite enough. Case closed, high five, hughug;):D

De Souza is only just getting back to you now? Must have been one heck of a motorbike wreck. And maybe he's the only guy (but, if so, I would wonder about the dealership). Then again, we're talking East Africa...so you never know.

It will be interesting to hear what he finally has to say.

Good luck, and I hope he can get your bike soon!

Done for production in June

Getting exited. BMW Kenya promised me a R Nine T production June. I expect to receive the bike by the end of September. June production, July and August shipping to Nairobi. September Pre Delivery Inspection and delivery to the border with Tanzania. And clearing process in Tanzania is between 3 weeks and 6 month, we will see. Very happy I can get one if there will be no other hick ups.

The continuing story of the R nineT initially ordered in 2013.

22/4/2014: Michael writes: I am pleased to advise that we have managed to get a June 14 production slot, and have already put your new BMW on the system: I insist again that the bike should be addressed to me in Tanzania and that the shipping papers should mention : end destination Tanzania.

April 2014: Several e-mails and I pay Euro X.500 (50%)

Ref. : 7089618 Model : R1200X / R NineT

Colour : Black Storm Metallic Owner Manual English Anti-Theft Alarm System

14/8/2014: I have registered the bike in Tanzania with license plate number T211 XX 257 and sent the papers to Michael.

10/9/2014: Michael confirms that the container arrives in Mombasa on 13 or 14 September.

I also sent the papers allowing importation in Tanzania.

10/09/2014: All papers are with Tanzanian clearing Agent.

26/9/2014: Michael e-mails that the ship is late (21/9/2014) and that the motorbike will be in bond on 6/10/2014.

2/10/2014: I pay the second Euro X.500,- based on the invoice received 2/10/2014.

3/10/2014: Michael confirms delivery to the border by 8/10/2014.

7/10/2014: Michael informs that the export procedure has changed since 15/9/2014. Two more papers have to be made in Kenya, one in Tanzania.( Customs Export Declaration will be prepared in Tanzania by the Clients Agents)

8/10/2014: Bibi Awes (Assistant import manager BMW Kenya) sent the bill of lading and the Road consignment note by e-mail to Tanzanian Clearing Agent.

9/10/2014: Tanzania works on custom validation procedure.

10/10/2014: Today it is explained by Kenya clearing Agent that after the Tanzanian paperwork they need two days to get the bike out of bond and do the PDI.

It has now been 11 month since I wished to buy the R nineT and twice I have been prepared to drive to the Border with Kenya to pick up the bike.

I am rather upset that I never get the correct information on time. It seems that BMW Kenya is lacking capacity to sell 1 motorcycle.

In the meantime BMW Motorrad opened in Dar es Salaam. In reality with all the delays I could have bought it in Dar es Salaam…….

I drive it

Yesterday I picked up my new bike, after many delays and custom problems. But today I drove it from North Tanzania to Dar es Salaam and I have it (wrongly) registered but it is registered and insured. 800 km partly unpaved but i loved the dive and the bike.
