Finally got my new nine t on Saturday. LOVE it. It rides wonderfully. Am I really going as fast as the speedometer says? Doing 90 feels like doing 75 on my old r1200c. Does anyone know the likelihood that the speedo is off?

Well, I can tell you that BMW auto speedometers are always, and I mean always optimistic. Not by much, but my GPS says 65, my speedo says 68-70. In my old Mercedes, if the gps says 65, the speedo is pretty much right on 65. I've noticed this on BMW's for many years. Dunno if they want you to think its a faster car, or if they do it as a safety feature, but there it is.

Not sure about the bike manual, but the car manual tells you exactly how much over it is. I believe it is for liability regarding tires wearing and reading slower. I don't like it. Think my gps claims 57 when speedo says 60. If I remember correctly the manual said 5 percent.

I'm loving mine so far too.

I've mounted my GPS and at 90mph indicated the GPS was reporting 80. At 75 indicated GPS reported 67. At 65 GPS was 60. That's from memory... could be a couple mph off...

So it does appear to be a bit off. Good to know how much to adjust by though.

I would expect 90 to feel like 60 on a 12c for sure.
But yes, the speedo is off on all BMW bikes and exponentially overstate the speed as you go faster. The fellow who's been saying he's gone 141 mph on a 9T is sadly mistaken, or been mislead, this bike won't go that fast in reality, no matter what the speedo says. Maybe 130 actual, maybe. - after the motor is worn in.

Cross9T, off by 10mph at only 80 seems a bit more than usual for BMW bikes though.

Just think, if you don't mount up a GPS and know for sure, you can "speed" all day long and will never get a ticket. ;)

The German TUV (equivalent of our DOT) requires speedos to be optimistic. GPS vs. speedos on my other beamies is something like 4 mph @ 65 mph..
Of cause they are optimistic. They have to be, to prevent the manufacturer to pay all the tickets of flashed drivers/riders... ooh officer I cannot understand why you say 58, my speedo said 50...

Over here, only taxis and other offical verhicules have officially calibrated speedos. (plus trucks of cause)

I just noticed this on mine too. It is reading way fast. Are there any calibrations that can be done to fix it?
@Hm91 This originally only affected early R nineT motorcycles (2014). This was fixed by a software update. What model/year of bike do you have?

Can I also ask that you put your location in your profile? Really helps in a global forum such as this. :)

Yes, there was a software update. There wasn't a recall or service bulletin. It was an automatic update if your bike was hooked into the system after the updates' release. Seems the affected bikes had speedos reading 10 -15% fast. This was discussed in several forum areas. With the GPS log to compare, the consensus is pretty accurate. With speedo saying 100 my GPS
consistently logs 93. So to get my 1-TON I push 108 to be sure. The faster the finer the ride. If she only had wings I’d never come home.
