Stock HORN Upgrade...

18863 Views 82 Replies 34 Participants Last post by  UGS_Tom
Hello All,

Has anyone upgraded the horn on your R9T? I am running a trick'd out custom 2017 Pure errr NOW ROADSTER (pics will follow soon) and want to replace the anemic horn that sounds like I am on a scooter... Anyone???

I am looking for the best, loudest and ease of install. I know the Denali Mini SoundBomb is out there, not sure if its the right one for me.

Thanks... Mit Besten Gruben :)

I’m not at my computer right now, but if you search the forum you’ll find various solutions already published. Also I fitted a loud dual horn setup to my bike - nice and loud. If you have the stamina have a look at my longgggg Baldy Dave’s 9T Mods thread, it’s in there somewhere!!!! Lol

Now please tell me you at least attempted to search the forum for "horn"? :hope:

You will find discussion and some solutions in these threads;
Loud Horns Save Lives
Gonna Fix That **** Horn I will
Stock HORN Upgrade...
K1600 horn
Horn Wiring/Relay arrangement questions..
Toot toot or get the F^&* out of my way
Horns - early warning system

:eek:k:

I went with the Stebel Nautilus, not the easiest instal but very effective.
Other members have had success installing replacement horns in the current horn location. That may be what you are looking for.

I searched under HORN UPGRADES / HORN / HORN MODIFICATIONS and some other and got ZERO results... So Yes, I'm not a NEWB :laugh2:

To be honest, I used the quick search function... However upon going to the advanced search functionality, I found more than my share of results... So THANKS... haha

I think the Stebel Nautilus is the way to go too... I will follow your lead and let everyone know the results...

Cheers...

Cost effective horn replacement

A pretty rubbish Sunday's weather drove me to the garage to work on my 9T. One of my jobs was to upgrade the frankly hopeless and embarrassing horn to a cost effective alternative. Happy to admit I’m not as mechanically competent as some forum members so I went for a replacement that would fit in the same space as the original without modding. Chose a single note AM80S FIAMM which cost a whopping £12 and came with two fitments, pin and spade, the former fitted straight to the original loom connector. The horn fitted onto the original bracket with a little persuasion and I just had to change the nut to fit the FIAMM threaded bolt. (6mm I think) A bit fiddly because it’s tight in there (I raised the petrol tank to give better access) but well worth it for a much louder sound. Will post a video of anyone is interested to hear.

Let's hear the honk!

I am considering the same "path of least resistance" horn upgrade.
I'm usually just honking at deer and turkeys anyway.

There isn't much room to hide a compressor driven horn and they seem to have pretty high failure rates.
Although some members here have been very creative with their installs. :)

Yes please! :iagree:
Ok will do once I have found how to upload a video / audio file. Plus it sounds pants on my IPhone for some reason

did you need a relay or was it completely plug and play?
Plug and play, the horn came with two different fitment caps which fit onto the terminals on the horn body. One cap had spade connectors, the other pin and it was the latter that fitted directly into the block connector on the OEM loom. The nut that fits the Fiamm horn is smaller than the stock item but that’s about it. I think it’s a 6mm ID, 10mm spanner fitment

Thanks for the info. These are a little harder to find in the states, at least the Italian made ones.

I’ll post one over to you if you want no problem.

That would be amazing, thank you! I'll pm you.
In failing to get any information over on the K1600 horn post I ordered one of these yesterday. They are available on Amazon UK. Total cost for me was $25 with shipping and it will be here (Wyoming) in a week and a half. Thanks for the heads up!
I want/ need to replace the squeaky-toy OE horn asap. It seems a VERY tight fit in there - is it made easier if the front of the fuel tank is lifted, as explained in some excellent detail elsewhere here? TIA...
Yes because then you can access that area from above.
I wouldn't attempt to do a horn changeover from the side or below, insufficient room to move.

Thank you! Looks like a spot of tank-wrestling may be in order... I plan to mount a Stebel Magnum unit - made in Italy, affordable and effective - but I suspect I'll have to mount it somewhere else, possibly externally, rather than in the spot now occupied by the OE. There's a potential handy-looking mounting hole on the LHS, where the horn might benefit from some slight protection from road-spray by the oil-cooler radiator just in front of it.

I got the Denali Sound Bomb Mini. I had some issues initially. Water from pressure washing got in it and sound like it caught a cold. Now I see what people say. It works and makes a difference.
Gotta get me one of these. The horn that comes with the bike is very embarrassing. I cannot believe BMW would want to associate a heritage bike with that emasculated mmeeeeep ...
You glide down the road with that impressive boxer engine sound, only to undo your grand entry with a honk comparable to a vespa.
