Sydney Motorcycle Expo 15/11/13 - it's here

I've seen it and it's every bit as pretty in 3D as you'd expect, if not better.

Debut in Australia at our Motorcycle Expo was a 'pre production' model. No one was allowed on board so I can't vouch for comfort but that's a simple fix if it is a problem. I'm guessing that some buyers over 6 feet (183 cms) will want to re upholster their seat to raise it and thereby get more leg room, especially those intending to tour or go for longer rides. Ditto for pillions.

First impressions from a bloke who's 6 ft tail and spent the last 7 years on a couple of R1200R's, an HP2 Megamoto and 3 x 1200GS's:

Comfort
1. overall a lot lower and much smaller than expected, bar and seat quite a bit lower than a R1200R, dwarfed by a R1200GS.
2. pillion is going to have her knees up around her ears (stop those thoughts)
3. area behind pillion seat reasonably stout and allows for a small fanny pack or a narrow pillion bag strapped on and extending back beyond pillion seat.

Finishes
4. very good, on all aluminium sections. The tank is particularly nice.
5. black paint is 'deep' colour and finished on the aluminium tank very well.
6. nice welds.
7. frame looks very strong at major junctions.

Uhmmm
7. steering damper very noticeable
6. air intake cover attractive from side on, front on, the snorkel is more obtrusive

I took quite a few photos from different angles than the press photos so readers can make up their own minds but have been unsuccessful in posting them. If someone can tell me 'how to', I'll put them up.

All in all - many sleepless nights ahead waiting.

BMW Rep had 'no idea' about delivery date, quantities in manufacturing run, price apart from "probably a bit less on road that a R1200R spec'd up".

We wait, and wait and ...

Wheelbase was the same as I remember...
R1200r = 2145mm
R9T = 220mm
I thank you :D:D

Footrest are lower on the R9T, for sofar I can see
Footrest lower? :mad:
footrest chicken bolt will be gone soon cause if I have to pay for the whole tire I intend to use it up to the edge. ;)
If I may weigh in on the whole seat height concern. For Mrs Chumba and I, the main concern is if the seat is low enough! Well not really for Me,(6ft1in) but Mrs chumba is only 5ft4in. And as the R Nine T is intended to be Her daily ride, We're hoping the height and rake angle will suit someone with ducks disease! Lets hope this magnificent looking machine can be all things to almost everyone!

Chumba try the custom logo seat (optional extra BMW) it's slightly lower 775mm as standard is 785mm ,but you may give some comfort away :confused: ;):D
Thanks Bose, The 775mm seat is a classy looking item too. It is definitely on the shopping list!
Being 5'9", the lower seat height is better for me. But, for my son and you taller guys, my guess is you will have to adjust that in some way. Frankly, my only "fit" concern, is how far back the pegs are. Ducati monster pegs are a bit too far back for me. If you search all the pictures, the bike does indeed look somewhat compact. Again, for me, thats a good thing. Most BMW's these days, are just too tall for me. I saw in the specs, the seat height is 30.5 inches. The Bonneville is 29.5, and that was one of my first choices......till I saw the pics of this, and put my deposit down :)
I too attended Darling Harbour on the weekend and admired the Nine T.

My observations were as follows;

The R1200R which was displayed next to the Nine T looked huge in comparison.

The Nine T's painted tank, aluminium highlights and the white stitched seat gave the bike a very bespoked look (truly a stunner).

The Nine T was indeed a crowd puller, in fact it was one of the few bikes at the show that had a constant crowd of onlookers (their collected overheard comments were all very positive - a rarity for a beemer).

Bring on 2014.

I called into one of the Queensland dealers on Saturday, I was a little surprised to find that they had very limited knowledge of the Nine T! I have two other dealers at My disposal, and will be making further inquiries in the next day or so.This said however I am not usually a dealer hopper, and there is little point in being in a rush, all will be revealed in good time. And I imagine they're all in a similar position.

Thank you for sharing those wonderful photos
great shots
i appreciate that you added them here
thanks
Perfect pics from details we haven't seen yet.
Thanks

Maybe a little oversized ;)
That's how I got them from petrichor. Being not the owner, I didn't have the guts to change anything.. :)
very nice shots. many details that I was interested in, especially those related to attachment points on the rear hub and the connections for the passenger seat/fender.
What bring a new model to the public then don't even let them sit on it :eek:
Hope all you Australians like buying on looks alone :rolleyes:
Crikey those files are huge

M&M makes a point.

I'm happy for the files to be trimmed down, but heck; I don't know how to do that!

I've sent Gerry a few more photos and he may post them if he thinks they're worth it and has the time.

Yes frustrating not to be allowed to sit on the pre production model, but I'm imagining it will overall be something like a R1200R (a great bike), with a flat seat more like a Bonneville (& hopefully more comfortable!).

We know what power/torque performance to expect - somewhere between a 2010+ R1200R and GS. Suspension will be a refined USD fork - I have faith in BMW AND if I doesn't suit on all fronts we can modify it to our hearts content.

Having said all that I have put my deposit down, and that is "subject to test ride"; so there is an out and a queue a mile long behind me if I pass - which I doubt.

An under-the-bike shot of the pipes!

How good is that?!

I doubt I would have seen that view even if I was looking at the bike myself.
