I think mods and builds are very different from each other. I would usually equate mods to personalization - a term a few people have used on this thread already - and both of these differ from customization, which may or may not be a complete build.

For example, there are folks on the forum who have fabricated their own luggage mounts, which I would call customization. But to me that's not a build. And the word custom is by itself kind of loaded, too. I've seen many bikes for sale (usually Harley-Davidsons) listed as being "custom," when in reality all they've changed are the grips, exhaust, and maybe swapped on more chrome parts. That's not custom in my opinion any more than me adding a rear luggage rack to my bike. Maybe 'custom' should mean something that can't be undone. It's not really for me to decide either way.

To me, a mod is anything you change on the bike, even something as simple as swapping out OEM mirrors for a bar end set. And a build is an almost from the ground up new bike, save for the engine and frame. There are in-betweens of course, but if someone gets upset that I "modded" my bike by installing a MudSling, it's really just semantics.

Some folks take this way too seriously. As long as the bike is being ridden, I don't care what you call it. Just go ride. ;)

Adding a Quadlock mount isn't a mod but bolting on new headers that deletes the catalytic converter to me is and it will to any dealer or person buying it.

My Monkey has a different camshaft, air intake, full exhaust and tune among various other bolt on items and I'll probably go with a 149cc BBK and ported heads. While the various racks, windshield and control parts are easily removed the rest is not. Doubling the HP is most definitely a modification in my book.

you mesn us going for a ride on a bike is the same as an adventure for someone who hasent ridden before ?

a ride around the neighbourhood to the coffee shops on your sportster is the same as getting your gsa dirty on a unpaved road .... just enjoy your bikes and smile . whatever you do with it , as long as it makes you happy , you are winning .

Per people on the internet both of these are stock bikes.

Even though the only stock stuff left on the Triumph is the frame and internals.

Then with the NineT, because I didn’t hack the frame or have any desire to change the “look” it’s also stock, even if a ton of parts are hand fabricated by a metalworker.

OK, what I want to know is … what’s wrong with a “stock” bike when it looks like either of those machines, they are beautiful. Anyone…. (well almost anyone) in the market for a motorcycle that sits in the $20K range of bikes is going to recognize the money tied up in extras … calling it stock doesn’t de-value the bike any more than calling it custom automatically makes it more expensive. The bike will bring what the seller will bring it down to and the buyer bring it up too ……. The market value is about what the bike will bring on the day you decide to buy or sell it …. not weather it’s called “Custom” or “Stock” …… it’s just semantics and some BS thrown in for good measure. If you want to ask more ..or pay more for a “Custom” bike what’s stopping you ? What are you willing to pay ? Don’t let choice adjectives value the machine …. What’s it worth .,…….2U ? It’s that simple.………………………………………….. Blitz

For me, I grew up going to custom car shows my entire childhood. I’ve always had the hot Rod spirit. Every car a v8, every bike a twin, etc. I modify everything.

Me2, I do lots of “Mods” Diva… just in kind of a different way …. I design, fabricate, form, weld, fit, and install everything myself. Not quite Wunderlush or Rizome style but my own take ….. I come from a time when any custom work was a “one-off” situation … only one existed because you just built it… none of these aftermarket outfitters existed at that time ….. maybe the following phrases should be required and somehow made verifiable …. “I bought and had installed a ……bla bla bla”… or “I picked out a color and had my bike prepped and painted” or “I had a titanium pie cut exhaust header built for me” how bout …“I ordered a new bla-bla-bla that I’ll bolt on when it arrives in a day or so.” .. To me all of it ..(for the most part).. starts out as something else and is “customized” to fit your particular needs by modifying what ever doesn’t work for you ….to work for you. How Custom or elaborate that becomes depends on the task. What ever you call it when it’s done is up to you and then… what someone will pay you for it… is up to them. If you did it then you probably deserve what your asking $ … if you didn’t do it maybe you still deserve what your asking because you payed someone to do what you could not …and now their selling it to you ….. WHO CARES ….. put the money in your pocket and start the next project ….. or as I like to say “Shut-Up & Ride” ……….. you do what you do Diva and the credit will follow … you will know and that’s all that really counts, StayUpOn2 ..…………Blitz
