Desperate to modify the tail, i had a closer look at the assembly. Good news is that the US tail light can be exchanged without having to replace the entire fender. The light, together with a small plastic adapter, can be unscrewed and separated from the fender. One should be able to purchase the Euro spec light, together with a small adapter pice and easily replace the huge tail light on the US model bikes.
If you want to remove the entire rear fender, you have to remove 4 screws from under the fender. These are spaced 14mm-14mm-8mm-14mm (14mm front to back, 14 mm side to side in front and 8mm side to side in back.). The entire plastic fender up to the beginning of the riders seat will drop down. I did not disassemble the wiring yet (thats a bit more involved), thats why I cant show you the disassembled pieces. I will try to purchase an aftermarket light-license plate assembly. Any suggestions? I was looking at the Rizoma parts...Cheers

Thanks for the "breakdown" of the tailpiece.
I have used Rizoma tail tidys before; very well made and strong.
My last one was for the registration plate only, I had to stick on an LED light. I could still use the original indicator locations so wasn't a difficult solution.

Having a look online I see all sorts available now, you can get an all-in-one which includes plate mount, light, and indicator mounts.
How do you think you will mount a replacement brake-light?
What style of brake-light would best suit the nineT?

If you remove the entire rear fender how easily is it to mount a Rizoma replacement? What do you mount it to?

I don't mind the original setup, so long as we don't get the US brakelight downunder!

Since BMW won't send the euro light to the US, perhaps by way of our forum, we could have some of our friends here purchase it for us, and ship it to us in the US. I wonder which light our Canadian friends will get? Another choice, the general manager of my dealership said Roland Sands is coming up with a number of customization parts.

From a cursory look, I am more disgusted with the license plate holder than the light. I will be doing some customization there for sure. Lets see, that makes 4 reflectors I am either removing, or replacing. Good grief, I don't even have my bike yet, and I am chopping it up in my mind.

Captain, Just purchased a Rizoma all-in-one tail piece PT106B, will try to install it next weekend. The tail piece, just like the BMW fender, attaches to the underside with 4 screws. This is what I will try to do. I don't know whether I will succeed but I will keep you updated in either case and will post pictures if it works. Since the spacing between screws is very likely different, I will fabricate an adapter plate that I will attach to the bike with the OEM screws, and to the tail piece with included Rizoma screws. I assume that the light includes brake light, as almost all of these aftermarket lights do.

Thanks for posting up how to remove the back fender and taillight. Now I just need to figure out what to replace it with. There are plenty of options out there though. I never knew there was a difference between the US and Euro models' tails. Can anyone post up a pic of the Euro rear end compared to the US version?

I have my brother in law fly to the US in a few weeks and I asked him to bring the EU taillight and holder from France for me.

Here are the required part numbers, all in it should cost me about $160 or so:

Number 5 on this picture (46 62 8 531 176)

This is the EU LED taillight (63 21 7 711 000)

and the washers and nuts, 2 each:
07 14 7 135 526
07 12 9 904 876

this is where the pictures come from:

While neither the LED blinkers nor the Euro spec-LED tail light is listed as official accessories for the r nineT here in the US, both can be purchased in the US as they are accessories to other BMW motorcycles. The Euro LED tail light seems to be identical to the LED light from the G450X (09/10) and can be purchased from a number of online US retailers. Also, the LED blinkers are common to several BMW motorcycles and can be purchased here.
See here for example: http://www.ascycles.com/Illustrated...tname=&bindName=LED taillight&bindCat=63_1110
