I’d like to change the muffler on my 2017 R NineT Racer from the stock one to the Vance & Hines one:

I’m just wondering if this will require a retune even though it’s just the muffler. I’m going to leave the headers and everything else alone.

I’d appreciate the insight.

On most bikes, swapping just the muffler does not require a re-tune.
If you did want to go the re-tune route then you will need an after-market engine management system The stock ECU does not have a provision for a re-tune and I have not heard of the availability of downloadable maps for the R9T ECU.

In summary, you should be good to go with just the muffler swap.

Let us know how the muffler sounds.

You told me what I want to hear lol. I appreciate it. I’m going to wait for a handful more responses before I pull the trigger though. If I did need a retune then it isn’t worth it to me simply because I’m not going to buy a tuner and then get a dyno just for a muffler.

My understanding with swapping mufflers is that any difference in airflow is going to be small enough that the ECU should adjust for it.

No retune necessary.... it'll be LOUD tho, I ended up switching from a shorty (Pro-Race GP, which is little more than an exhaust tip, FWIW) to the Unit Garage system on my Racer because it was too loud for my taste.

Thanks dude, appreciate the insight. Can you send me some links to what you’re talking about there with the Pro-Race GP and Unit Garage. I’ve had this bike less than a year, came from Harley. Not sure what all this is.

Noooooo ….. the CanBus can adapt easily to any exhaust change up ….. I’ve gone to straight out tail pipes and no re-tune necessary … she runs like a screaming demon … a LOUD screaming demon but no change in performance … maybe just a little quicker out of the hole … but no need to remap or dyno tune if all your doing is muffler swaps …. Have fun, many levels of pleasant noise available … your choice … now if your entering the TouristTrophy run you could probably use some fine tuning … ……………… StayUpOn2 …………….. Blitz

No re-tune needed but you will need good pair of ear plugs, that exhaust will be loud.
I still say if you want quiet buy a Vespa. A proper motorcycle should be loud … have you ever been to the races … loud, very loud ! Saying a motorcycle shouldn’t be loud is like saying Ferrari shouldn’t be Red …………………… buy an electric … real real quiet with no muffler at all … amazing……….Blitz

Here's the Pro-Race:
Pro-Race Exhaust Systems

Also have footage of the sound before I took it off (still got it if you are interested):

Here's the current Unit Garage set up:
..

I don't have sound on it personally, but there are examples on youtube.

I gotta say the pro race is pretty cool sounding. I don’t have an issue with loud. You have a pic of the bike with it on?

@dxamet WTF ? Are your children living in tunnels now ? Do you think because riders have exhaust pipes on their motorcycles that CAN be rather loud ..that they are ALWAYS loud ALL the time ? What are you and your kids doing hanging out in tunnels anyway ? If your worried about your childrens hearing perhaps YOU should take the responsibility to protect them as a good parent would… rather than try and make complete strangers passing by responsible for children's safety .. with a guilt trip ? …and they didn’t even know you had children … This is not a village and I’m not taking care of your kids for you … get some ear plugs … let me guess, you just got that screaming child to finally shut up and fall asleep, when you went through a tunnel with a motorcycle and it woke the baby back up so you want everyone to stop making noise and be very quiet as they pass you by because your going 15mph in 60. Was that the impetus for this post ….. ? Some biker bumping the throttle in an overpass ? That was a waist of space to post …. I know, I waist a lot of space. Try some ear plugs (on a strong string in case he swallows one )…….. and remember this : you can’t StayUpOn2 with a baby in your arms …. Leave him at home and he won’t hear a thing …………………………… Blitz ………….Beautiful Kid by the way …. How old ?

I think it looks Narley man, I just hope you don’t ride in flip flops brother … a spill can really F’up your feet, long time to heal from foot injuries. I had almost the same set-up for a while, it was pretty loud and it was that way through the entire range of RPM’s …. then I went to 3’ straight pipes …
now until I'm pushing her pretty hard the sound is impressive, noteable, just short of loud .. unless I twist her wrist and then she opens up like a jet with an afterburner … real loud … but it’s on demand. Just the way I wanted it ………… only when I want it …. Mostly in distracted traffic cell phones in hand and let me tell you IT WORKS … I haven’t had to use my very loud horn in a long time now. ….and I love how She sounds now. It’s like a Triumph/Harley’esk note … very distinct and unfortunately illegal on most of the planet. GodBlessTexas ………………………….Blitz

Naw I'm pretty firmly in the ATGATT camp; this was post install and wash to check the alignment of the pipe with the bike stood up.
It was still not nearly as loud as the straight-piped Harleys everyone loves around here, but IMO having the slight baffling in the new set up helped improve the tone. Also, I primarily commute to and from work, and don't love waking everyone up in a one mile radius at 7am. =)

There’s a hundred ways to set them up with aftermarket everything exhaust systems @RevvingKevin …When you add to that pie-cuts and custom fab there’s a hundred more. Each one with a volume and tone unique to its shape …. Find your favorite. …….. and have some fun, I went through four iterations before I got where I am now and each time loved what I’d done. Point is ..none was so overwhelming as to upset the tune. From completely stock to completely gone and straight out ….. Blitz never skipped a beat ….. so from my experience, no need to worry … just pay attention to your desired performance and see if it changes …. This talk about gaining or loosing a horse power or two … unless you dyno your bike regularly your not going to notice … if you drag race or flat track for a living perhaps you should tune ………………….. but you already knew that ! ……………………………….Blitz
