I have been #3 on the waiting list for months and now as deliveries draw near, I called my dealer this morning and my sales guy is looking up the USA and see's 130 bikes in the entire USA scheduled for delivery, maybe one per dealer and that's it.
He said BMW told all the dealers last week they have oversold the production run 3x over, they didn't anticipate the requests and they will have to complete the current run and begin production again, so people getting VIN numbers may be the only one that particular dealer is getting. He had the VIN scheduled to be delivered to our store but that one had a deposit a month before mine.

What next production run? I was told that they would be produced for one quarter, then production stopped as they wanted this to be a limited production run. This is not unprecedented. In 2001, BMW brought in only 100 of the R1100SLA's into the US. Unfortunately, I young bimbo left turned me 4 yrs ago and mine was totaled. Limited production runs are just that, l i m i t e d.

My dealer in Germany told me the annual production of 9Ts is 7.500 of which 1.000 are for the North American market.

I think that was of the FIRST production run.
I'm pretty sure bmw is making these like hostess is making cupcakes...

No guarantee about a further run, or when it would be, but they were definitely under the belief there would be further production. They had no information that the bike would only be for one model year, and didn't believe it would be so limited.

Not wanting to spread rumors...but I was talking with someone last weekend (when I was given my 9T VIN) who said that BMW is already in the process of discontinuing manufacture of the air/oil-cooled engine. Consequently, the 9T as we see it now will end when the engines are used up.

That doesn't necessarily mean the bike's style will go away. Assuming it remains popular through the run of air/oil-cooled machines, a water-cooled version would probably be considered. It wouldn't be that difficult to do given the use of standard forks/front suspension. Replace the oil radiator with one appropriate to the liquid-cooled engine, maybe modify the gas tank a bit...done.

I mentioned that probability to my dealer, who didn't discount the thought. However, he noted that the liquid-cooled engine is not the proven workhorse that the air/oil-cooled engine is. Certainly, it's a bit more powerful, but he says it is also more computer-controlled (variable engine-mapping, ride-by-wire).

So the potential is still there for a 9T style going into the future...two cylinder, stripped down roadster...but probably one that has a bit more electronic control to it. Not necessarily a bad thing, if that sort of thing appeals to you.

In fact, I gave some serious thought to pulling the plug on my 9T order. Might have been an entire minute...
