What did you do to your R nineT today?

384627 Views 3309 Replies 366 Participants Last post by  K9F
I know it's a cornball topic however this type of thread has been very entertaining and extremely informative on other forums. Our souped up NC Miata has multiple improvements, the ideas gleaned from a similar thread at miata.net, and the little tips gained over the years now seem essential. Obviously technical specifics should be posted in the appropriate forum however a general digest of daily tinkering or even that awesome ride you took today may inspire someone to expand their R nineT envelope.

So, today I installed the Ohlins Steering Damper. It almost seems like it's upside down but thats what the instructions show. Next was surveying the available real estate in the frame behind the steering head for the small Stebel Nautilus tooter that arrived today. Tight fit indeed if this is going to work. And finally, I stared at the bike for a long time as usual, with most of the constructive thoughts towards the next generation of my tail tidy (thanks again Marc Australia).

Hopefully tomorrow I can post that I took Li'l B for a long, long ride instead of just dinking with the bike.

Mounted an onboard socket this evening. Ideal for using an Optimate 4.
My RT came with one, but the RnineT only had a USB connector.

For the BMW fitted socket you need Canbus chargers to overide electronics, is this connected directly to battery, ie you can basically use any charger?

Was it difficult to fit?
Not realy Stevie. The only hard part was fitting the smal washer (5) and nut (11) behind the clamp (4). My hands are too big 🙃 But if you just glue (or kit) them on the back side of that clamp prior to attaching that clamp then you are able to hold the washer/nut in place with one finger while putting in the bolt (6). Oh, and fit the socket and socket nut (2 and 3) into the bracket (1) before you attach the connection cables (7). The rest is peanuts. You can just re-position the tie-wraps as needed.

See the attachment in my other post. It is not directly connected to the battery, so you must use a canbus charger.

Installed the koso multi function display. the end of my quick test ride of about 14miles, it started glich’in a little. The gear indicator rectangle area stared blurring with horizontal lines completely obscuring the gear indicator. Nothing else affected.

I‘ll take it out tomorrow and see if the problem returns.

Rode it! Afternoon coastal jaunt to Lyme Regis, West Bay dropping off at Weymouth Bike Night on the way home. 150 miles of smiles. Must be said, month in of ownership and first ever experience of a 'shafty' and it is the smoothest bike I have ever ridden for gear changes, surprisingly swift too!

I didn´t realize I was used to bevel shaft, until I ride my Ninet....Unbeliveble!!!. It is my bike!!!. Before with chain bikes I was wrong!!!

I always rode bike like I drive my car...I mean, I use same way throttel and clutch... So chain with variation tension points was very uncomfortable...I felt bike like a rocking chair...

But Bevel Shaft is direct, constant and regular like a car!!!...no "rocking chair" movements due to chain tension differences...

I love unboxing!!!. Easy way to generate expectation ...:p

Let me a second...I have to take a picture.

Last oil service I try new one. Then I realized I didn't have same oil to refill. I don't want mix with different oil until next oil service
So I need to buy spare oil 1L bottle. A Flexible funnel. Normal rigid funnel is a bit difficult to use for me. Not enough space to get in the filling oil hole. I expect new flexible one was easier. And a Mug for coffee time.

Rode it again.

Best part of 200 miles in lovely sunshine.

Blasted down for breakfast at the Lobster Pot Cafe at Bognor Regis about 75 miles eastward along the coast.

Then rode to Whiteways which is simply a large car park/rest stop adjacent to the A27. It has a small kiosk cafe but is very busy with motorcycles during the riding season.

Finally decided to head to Loomies Moto Cafe another busy bikers cafe. To get there you have to go through Midhurst which had a large fire there recently and the main road is shut as a result. The detour is a nightmare. Nevertheless there is pedestrian thoroughfare. Simple solution: Get off the bikes, push them the 50 yards/metres through the pedestrian area and start them up the other side. Did give me the opportunity to photograph the remains of the 400 year old hotel. It was housing Ukranian refugees at the time of the fire.

Loomies then struck for home. 1000 miles in three weeks on the BMW.

Nothing! Gave it a deserved day off and dug the other bike out instead. As the car is in for a clutch change will be riding the BMW to work until the car is ready, hope it's quick. Must be said, I hate riding for necessity and thought those days were long gone!

Did what I was supposed to do when I had the tank off to upgrade the horn. Put a new air filter in at 23,000.
The clean air filter I took a picture of next to the dirty one was sitting next to another clean filter. I reached back and grabbed a different one.

Nice job! I've been dreading changing the air filter, and I let the shop do it the first time. But after watching a how-to video on YouTube recently it doesn't seem as tough a task as I'd thought.

I have three questions, if you please:
  1. Approximately how many miles did you have on the old filter? I know everyone's riding environment is different, some dustier than others, but I'm wondering if I should change the air filter more often than the manual suggests.
  2. I see a wire mesh screen over the new filter, which I don't think is included on the OEM filters. Did you add that, and if so where did you get it? Looks like a great addition!
  3. One how-to video I watched on YouTube recently showed the owner removing the side pieces, but you've apparently just rotated them upward. Did you just loosen them slightly to do that? Like you I have a Hepco & Becker rack on my bike and I'm reluctant to remove those bolts. Not a big deal, really, but I like what you did here.
Thanks in advance for your answers, @Baloo !! :)

Hi Tim,
1. Rule of thumb is every 12k but use your discretion. Dusty dirty riding change sooner. Change soon if you get it wet. I usually change mine whenever the tank has to come off whether needed or not because it is a PITA.
2. That's the way the filter was made. I have seen three different screen configurations and don't really have a preference. I had a K&N years ago it worked but I don't think it is a better choice unless filters are to come by.
3. yes I just loosen them enough to fold back and lightly secure as seen to hold in place. Be very careful when you are removing the air filter cover. You might have a main wiring harness could be in your way. I have to pull it down a little bit in order to clear. Best to snip the zip tie, holding the harness, then replace it Also, you can easily break the stub that runs through that rubber grommet. I like to spray a little plexus or apply a dab of silicone grease in the grommet hole, so it slips out easier.
Good luck
