I have a home-made mesh covering the mouth and depending on the season have found squashed bugs on the screen - rather have them on the mesh than collecting on the air filter.
Seat-of-the-pants impression tells me there is no loss in engine performance (I do ride at sane speeds).
At service time, the dealer had no comment on my chicken-mesh air intake guard.

@rich46, I defer to your expertise in the matter and you are correct, air flow calibration is a tricky matter.
The change in snorkel design on the R12 opened the thought that the motor can live with differences in the intake design.
Wishing that I had access to an instrument that measured the delta of the air flow with and without the mesh and the resulting A/F ratio set by the ECU - but then I don't, so I will leave the matter to rest.
Though, it is an interesting discussion and I appreciate you sharing the expertise 🙂

After reading the aforesaid technical arguments, my home-made mesh filter is coming off at the start of the 2025 riding season!
