Charging battery using canbus

I suspect that your charger is not "communicating" with the canbus, Optimate have a special BMW CanBus charger, i have not problems with that charger to keep the battery topped up:

OptiMate 4 CAN-BUS Edition - OptiMate

Have you read the owners manual? I am sure it tells you in it that you have to connect the canbus charger within a few minutes of switching the ignition off, otherwise the canbus port shuts down after about 5 minutes.
Not my experinece actually... I can plug in the charger via the DIN plug from Wunderlich (which is connected to the back of the USB port) well after I switched of the ignition and it will still charge

Way too complicated, with every Optimate charger you get a set of heavy duty leads that connects directly to battery plus you can then connect any socket directly to battery and it allows you to run a compressor without blowing fuses. Can add a usb, DC OBD , any socket directly to battery. Very convenient. I just preferred my Racer to be "clean" if extra cables. Went that road on my GSA.
It is not complicated at all,... but you do what you want to do... I have a neat din plug with a little cover, nothing dangling or tiewrapped to the frame somewhere

I am at fault, my technical skills are seriously lacking, so I tend to take the simpler road. I use the canbus port and Optimate 4, not ideal but it works. 😄
There is no longer a DIN port on the later models (Eur5+?) just a USB-A port in place of the where the previous models had the DIN-port. So I added the Wunderlich DIN port...
