Yes, definitely possible. I’ve done it last year, was relatively easy. Just be mindful of the fuel lines. There’s videos on YouTube that show you how to do it.

You have to remove the two front bolts. You also have be extra careful when lifting the tank because all those fuel line connectors as well as the fuel pump plate are plastic and do become brittle over time due to the heat. Its always best to do this job with an empty or near empty gas tank. Have fun!

 

Agree with the two posts above.......but would add to be very careful when tilting/pivoting the tank forward, as it's very easy to damage the ignition switch housing, or the paintwork on the tank area near to it........or on the top yolk/handlebar clamps too. A thick bath towel or leather jacket to wrap around and cover the tank to help protect the paintwork is worth doing for extra peace of mind too.

Deffo easier and safer to have an assistant lift and hold the (preferably empty) tank whilst you swap over the batts.

Will do, not sure if I definitely need one yet but first ride out the other day and it only just started :-(

 

Same here… bought a used 2018. Seems to hold charge well when on trickle charges, but some fatigue after sits for a day or two no trickle charger…. Dreading the whole tank removal so looking for easier path

 

Forgot to suggest you attach a trickle charger pigtail to the new battery and secure it to a convenient location so you can maintain the battery during down time.

 

Yeah I always use trickle charger but I suppose they can't last forever. Keeping fingers crossed that it's OK next time I try starting it. Bike is coming up to 3 year old in a few months or so.

 

Its really not bad, but you want to get as much fuel out as possible. I siphoned mine out. I didn't bother disconnecting the overflow hose as it wouldn't budge I left that attached.

 

For sure poor engineering in requiring fuel tank removal to change battery. I've changed battery on 2018 Scrambler and never comfortable with the fragile snap on fuel lines. I had wondered if there's an easier way and anxious to further research using the technique discussed here.

 

I ran the charger pigtail out the left side of the bike and tuck it under the trim panel where the 10 pin OBD 2 plug lives. It is totally stealth.
