Could that be just thick grime? Looks similar to mine.

 

There should be a plastic plug in that hole on your frame it helps keeps water and dust out of the head stem bearings.

 

Looks like road grime build up from a lack of cleaning. I wouldn't worry about steering head bearings unless you feel a clicking when you hold the front break and try to move the bike back and forward, or when you turn the bars if you feel notches is another sign the bearing races are bad.

 

Looks very normal. DON'T try to get the area perfectly clean with a pressure washer. You don't want to force water into the steering head. Just wipe off what grime you can if you feel the need.

 

You should be worried if you did not have a little grease here.

 

ALL grease migrates. The oil separates from the wax over time. If you let the crud build up, the oil capillaries into the muck. Usually the bearings get knackered and have to be changed and regreased during that.
Pressure washers are bad news for motorcycles. Don't let anybody tell you any different. 👍

 

Looks normal; as other stated if there is binding, clicking or resistance in the range of motion while turning the front wheel you have steering head bearing issues. If “new” under warranty don’t worry check with dealer until 36000 miles or 3 years.

 

Thanks folks! I think it was probably just road grime mixed with grease, it still feels smooth going from full lock left to full lock right. I cleaned it using a garden hose and automotive soap and wiped it down, so no pressure washer. I'll keep an eye on it

 

I got the advice from this topic as well! Spent $10 on the plugs for the holes on the headstock.
