Has anyone had success fitting a rear rack along with a side bag with a carrier bracket? Or do people go one or the other?

Just posted same picture on the luggage thread. I use pelican cases and they use the unit garage system so for less wintery trips I use the unit garage soft luggage. Very nice. Rack is Wunderlich I think. Bought a while back. All works great even carrying winter gear. For

summer camping it’s way OTT unless you want to bring 5* luggage! Strips right back to the rear hump or pillion with a few bolts. Two bikes for the price of one ?

It’s not compatible, but I knew it could work, so I modified it to fit, e.g. cut the BMW bracket just behind the last/3rd “stanchion” and then connected it to the bottom bracket of Rizoma’s rear luggage rack. I’ll try to upload a photo. (FYI: It’s a temporary “fix” until I can get to a welding shop to have something nicer fitted to the end.)

I fabricated my own center luggage rack so I could use a Corbin solo saddle. The semi-solid saddle bags are hung on factory frames. I took the original front turn signal housings and converted to LED’s and attached them to my fab rack. It will carry an assortment of luggage when I tour, and the handle is wrapped in survival cord, makes a good grab handle when I have to muscle the bike around.

With some trial & error & exhaustive interwebs sleuthing I deduced that there is only one rear rack that's actually compatible with the BMW OEM side saddle bracket: the Unit Garage. Not tested yet since it is still in transit but will verify shortly. I do know neither the Rizoma nor the Hepco & Becker ones will work with the OEM/SW-Motech side bracket.

I do like the dual setup from Unit Garage...would be perfect for a long trip...and it claims to be compatible with most/all rear racks but I'm not a fan of how it looks without the luggage attached. I'm also partial to the gray tweed canvas & the cleaner fold-over look on OEM bags as opposed to UG's all brown colors & visible roll. But obviously my personal preference...their stuff looks quality.

Not entirely the case. Although this may not be everyone's cup of tea. This style rear rack, widely available through multiple import sources and Ali Express will work with the SW Motech (and assuming the similarly styled BMW version)

My story and pics are here pairing those two.

I should have the final product back soon as last I knew it was in powder coating this week.

The lines for the pair are actually quite good together.

It was a bit of a struggle but can confirm that the Unit Garage rear rack will install alongside the OEM (or SW Motech) side bag. A bit worried about cross-threading, having to force things into place to get it aligned & a couple of the bolts started down that path, but backed out & stayed with it to get them all in straight.

Unit Garage rear racks and side brackets fitted (as I think they look the tidiest). SW Motech LC 1/2? Bags as I think they are the best quality. However, bought the bags without any attachments and then attached the Unit Garage KlickFix system available to buy separately. I personally think this gives you the cleanest fixings to the bike and some of the best bags available.
