Optimate 4 is tried, tested and frequently recommended on this forum, so that more than anything else would make me buy Optimate. I've had an Optimate 4 canbus edition for 4 years now and it's kept my 9T's battery in good nick and plugs into the accessory socket without fuss.

No idea about the BMW charger, but I'm going to guess it'll be more expensive and probably not offer more than the Optimate does...

The BMW dealership here only stocks the Optimate 4 -- if I wanted the BMW canbus charger, I would have to order it. I got my Optimate 4 from Amazon.

oguzbay, I can only speak for the BMW charger because that's what I have. I think it's great and so easy to use because all I have to do is plug it into the accessory port on the left side of the bike, and viola the battery is charged.

I never leave it plugged in while I'm not there. During the winter months when I'm not riding my bike, I connect the charger to charge the battery, and that whole process takes about 5 minutes.

The pandemic had left me stranded away from home (and my R9T!) for six months less three days. The charger remained plugged in for the duration. When I got back, I unplugged and hit the start button. With a shake of it's head (as if to scold me for the neglect :) ) the bike started and idled without missing a beat.

I use the Optimate charger.

Having used Optimate products for many years and having two of them installed in the tractor shed - I was a little disappointed at having to buy another one when I took delivery of my R9T. My existing Optimates were not the Canbus/BMW variants - so yet another unplanned purchase. Bit of research led me to believe that the Optimate 4 was what I needed, bought it, installed it - and it was quick and easy to get operational. My own experience of Optimate products is that they give you peace of mind over the winter lay off period as well as when you don't ride for a few weeks and want to ensure that your battery stays in peak condition. I've never bought/needed a replacement battery since installing Optimates almost 20 years ago. Appreciated that the R9T comes with a built in charging socket - my other bikes have required the installation of leads and sockets - not a difficult job but just an example of other manufacturers being lazy and disconnected from real-world bike usage.
