My bike came stock with an alternator.

 

Any decent trickle charger with a battery monitor can be 'hard wired' directly to negative battery terminal (black) which nimble fingers can reach by just undoing the lower tank bolt and propping up tank with a suitable wedge thingo (rolled up welding glove), and added to the positive terminals (red) - which are at the front tabs for seat. A pair of pliers and 2 suitable round terminals is all that's needed. I already had 2 chargers from previous bikes, as well as keeping it interchangeable for all my rides. Has worked well for over 7 years ...
(never used to worry much about battery maintenance until a near empty battery caused the frying of the starter relay on my K100. The mechanic explained that the charge was enough to crank the starter but then dropped off and caused the contacts to fuse. Expensive relay to replace. I was too slow on the uptake - had to do it twice )

what kind of battery do we have in this ride.
One of these days I have to read the manuel but for now I figured I would ask if it is a
Sealed lead, or sealed lithium, gel?, anything, etc. ( Boy do I hope its sealed) I havent even thought about this simple maintenance

Because I already own two other CTEK chargers for my cars, I've bought the small CTEK XS 0.8 for the 9T and it works great.

The only thing to be aware is that for the 9T to recognize the charger, you first have to turn on the ignition before connecting the charger. I believe that would be the case for all chargers.

 

Just confirming. You turn on the ignition to recognize the ctek charger?
I have the optimate 4 canbus. Plugs into canbus port and charges without having to turn on the ignition. Thanks!

 

Did not know one has to turn on the ignition for charger to be recognized. Very interesting. C-tek are fine chargers, among the finest with the technology to handle any type of batter.alexford

VOX, In my opinion, the best choice..I use them, and no probs at all, plug them in your standard fitting and go..

 

Got my optimate today. It appears it arrives with program 2 (CANbus) as default setting. Right now, the power light, charge light and the 0.2 (flashing) light are illuminated.

Sounds about right. You have a new battery and you ride pretty often.

All that you described, are correct..
I will only use them when my bike stalled for longer than 14 days.
I use only the red plug..works perfect, no need to do some connections on your battery.

 

lacking the right plug (ordered from ebay china for $2) I just now took the seats off, unscrewed the two torx screws holding the (+) to the metal plate, clipped one alligator clip onto the frame and the other onto the battery and I'm using a small (1A) car lead acid trickle charger.

Why does the manual say NOT to charge the battery in-situ? that it must be disconnected first. That isn't normally a problem for cars. Wondering if this is just cover-their-ass language or there is a real reason for it.

 

I have an Optimate 3 and have bought the CanBus connector.

Do I need to make a change on the setting of the Optimate unit? I can only find info on the Optimate 4, not sure if these differ as the units look similar.

Any advice or shared knowledge appreciated.

I know, that only the optimate 4 dual are equiped for CANBUS loading, not the optimate 3.
You can use them, when you connect them directly on the battery..

 

Thanks for the confirmation. This was the Amazon advert I bought the connector from. Implies you can use the Optimate 3. I'll be sending it back then....

 

ANY quality trickle charge tender will do just fine. Save your monies for something useful. Like... ice-cream!

 

Built in 12v port allows to charge/maintain WITHOUT ignition turned on. Verified by yours truly. Mine is maintaining itself that way right now.

Thanks Loki, confirms my thoughts, that the advice from the supplier was incorrect. I may well sell my 3 and buy the 4. Neater than having a optimate connector to tuck away somewhere.

Charging Via. Built-in port

DOES NOT WORK.

I have to apologize for my previous incorrect statement. Evidently it does not allow for charging after its 60 seconds delay is up. I was too quick to glance at the charger, see its doing its job and run away. Oops!

So, regardless of what it says in the manual - Built in 12v port can NOT be used for charging.

 

Dont feel bad - the port can stay active for as long as 3 minutes.

 

Which charger are you using? I've been advised the Optimate 4 with canbus connector does work to trickle charge and maintain the NineT.

 

I purchased an Optimate a couple of days ago after a sluggish start the day before. It charged the battery without any issue. The documentation states that the charger activates the port when charging. It also deactivates the port for 30 minutes and the reactivates it to test charge retention.

 

Yea as @richrox986 says the latest Optimate charger should work without issue on BMW CANBUS systems. I'm getting one soon.

 

Turn on the ignition first time before connecting the charger for the 9T to recognize the charger.

 

I have an Optimate for Canbus and although not used yet on my R9T, it works fine on my GSA and also previously on a K1600, so I have every confidence it will work on the R9T.
I'll try it over the weekend and report back
