@Ennistymonjoe I have moved your post to this extensive thread that already discusses connecting a GPS.
Please read back through the above posts to get some ideas for your instal.
You can also read the Wiring Gadgets on the NineT Thread for some more advice.

Hi. Sorry I’m still a noob here, where’s the gps plug you speak of, and do you have to have a video or pictures of how to install the Zumo to the plug?
@adv883 I have moved your post to this stickied thread under the 'Electronics' section that already has alot of detail to help you out: GPS on the Nine-T Thread
Maybe take the time to read back through and then direct any further questions here? Cheers ;)

Where though does one put all the wiring, inline fuse and transformer that come with the Garmin? There seems to be miles of it. Is there a safe easy access point under the tank? How have others managed this?
There is enough room under the tank up next to the horn. You would want the inline fuse in an accessible spot so probably cable-tie that to one of the frame tubes off to the side.
I wired my Garmin unit to a doctored car plug, inline to the accessory power outlet, and it fitted nicely.
Or is it possible to run the power from the BMW socket straight into the garmin unit itself or is this a big no no?
A HUGE no no!
The BMW socket is 12v out; the Garmin is 5v in.
Don't ask me how I know, but I bricked a perfectly good unit finding out!

. . on the NineT I am certain that none of the accessory circuits stay live after a few minutes with the ignition turned off.
I have a a device connected to the 12v Powerlet on the LHS, and a GPS to the dedicated socket.
I can confirm that they both turn off after one minute of turning off the ignition key.

I'm curious if any of you have ever used a GPS Speedometer before. Would it update fast enough to be correct?
I've used several navigation systems that have the GPS speed displayed and they are fine enough for everyday use.
You don't need metre per second accuracy after all.

Guys, I grabbed an Excelvan GPS. . . . the **** thing is too small. Would I need a RAM mount with a double connector to make things happen?
I ordered one of those $9.99 connectors and plan to wire it for the pre-existing GPS plug.
You'll need to elaborate on "too small." What is too small?
Please describe the mounting setup you have now.
Oh, and pictures tell more than words.

Watch your voltages when you hard wire it up.

It will certainly work ok, but the looks of it is a personal opinion.

. . . does anyone know which of the pins on the BMW plug is the positive? Is there an easy way to tell? Or from the wires leading to the plug on the bike?
The wires leading to the plug on the bike are Red/White Stripe and Brown.
Red is Positive
Brown is Neutral (Negative)

Mine worked

Dave and others - has anyone ever soldered the GPS plug attachment to an iPhone cable? I've done this with the Garmin Zumo on my former bike and worked brilliantly but am now thinking about using iPhone for navigation. What would be the best approach to get the switched power from this plug to the iphone using the BMW adaptor cable?
Thanks!!
David
Hi David,
I did something very similar to power my car-style Garmin GPS unit when mounted on the nineT. (Fair weather use only!)
I cut the long end off the Garmin power adaptor that goes into a vehicle cigarette lighter/power socket. I soldered the BMW adaptor lead straight into the transformer part to give me 5v. All sealed up and mounted inside the frame rail under the tank.
Worked a treat. :nerd:

Dave, the back of my Zumo 590 is the same as the picture below. It came with the full harness as you have described.

I currently have the harness installed on my R1100RT and it wasn't a problem hiding the excess wiring. I left the USB port under the passenger seat incase I ever wanted to use it, and I bundled the audio stuff together with cloth tape and heat-shrink and cable tied that to the frame underneath the tank.

You could do the same on the nineT, and I would suggest for a neater finish, it would pay to lift the tank to hide the loom and keep it away from the hot stuff.

I have one on mine and it's excellent. I used the BMW Nav bracket that's for the bike - it fits perfectly and does not obscure the gauges.
All-in-all it suits the Nine T quite well.
Hi Mike, cheers for the heads up on this mount.
I have a 590LM mounted to another bike using the included Garmin mount, but this BMW mount could mean I could use the unit on the nineT also. ;)
Could you please post up a photo of your set-up with & without the GPS fitted?
I can't quite get how/where it fits on the handlebars.

I already have the connector plug to go into the nineT GPS power outlet under the tank, but how does this wire into the BMW mount, and where is the power stepdown 12v-5v?

Thanks for your help. :D

I have picked up the BMW Navigator IV of my R1200R and now I want it build on my Nine-T. Anybody knows where can I find the socket?
Answering OP's question . . .
Ronald, the GPS power outlet is strapped to the frame tube on the LHS underneath the tank, (directly above the motor cylinder). If you reach up along the frame tube that goes straight up, you will feel the cable-tie around the plug which you can just slide down. ;)
