Hej Søren
That plug is CANBUS controlled and will cut power to what ever you attach 60 seconds after you switch off the ignition.
But it is only amp'ed for the relatively small draw of a GPS Unit......
Haaber du bliver rigtigt glad for din knallert :)

This is the cable you can use to tap into the power supply from this socket:

Or if you need to power USB:
(I think I've got a spare one of these if anyone is interested)

Sat Nav - ready made cable - any suggestions?

This has probably been done to death but .... would really like to buy a 0.5 metre cable with BMW BUS plug one end (to plug into the socket under the tank left had side) and the Mini USB Type B Plug which plugs into Garmin Sat Nav the other end - can't find it any where but can't believe it doesn't exist - there must be other people who want to plumb an ordinary Sat Nav into the bike? A cable with the BMW BUS plug on the end would be start but was hoping I could find the whole thing all made up?
I've read the long thread about changing plugs etc, etc but didn't really want to get involved with changing plugs and soldering etc.
Just discovered this thread as I was looking to update my GPS situation. Been using the Garmin GPS out of my car for a while on my R nineT, keeping it in the plastic pocket on top of my tank bag, and plugging it into what I think is called the BMW BUS, that scaled down cigarette-lighter looking socket on the left side of the bike, right below the gas tank. If anyone is looking to do this, I connected the GPS to the BMW BUS with one of these cables from Powerlet:

Powerlet PPC-032 cable

It has worked for me, and has not yet blown up the GPS unit. I think it has a similar thing as the Garmin wiring harness for motorcycles, some kind of step down resistor or something that converts the 12 volts coming out of the BMW BUS to 5 volts going into the back of the GPS unit.

Well I stupidly let my Garmin Nuvi 2589 update thru Garmin Express, and now it no longer works on my motorcycle. Damn!

When I plug it in with the cable shown above (which has worked great for me for the last 12 months), I now get an error message saying the Garmin won't work with the power cable above (not sure how exactly it knows the difference between the cable above and the one I use in my car, they're all 12 volts). Anyway, so now I no longer have a GPS for the R nineT.

I don't have the budget to put down $500 on the Zumo XT, which I know is the gold standard for motorcycle GPS. Was wondering if anyone here has the Garmin Zumo 396 LMT-S and if so, what is your opinion on it?

Thanks in advance.

Best,
-Tim

I'm using the 395 on my Classic and my R12RT which you can see in this post: GPS on the Nine-T Thread (Merged)

I went with the 395 because it works with Garmins TPMS caps as well as their VIRB camera systems, the 396 does not work with the TPMS. You should be able to pick a referb 395 up for ~$200

I did some digging and experimentation, hopefully this will help some folks.

Zumo XT on 2021 R9T Scrambler

I could have easily wired the SATNAV to battery but didn’t want to drain the battery. The best (more work) option is to wire it to the key activated voltage plug as 70741 pointed out in his post. To do this, I ordered the male connector from BMW dealer and proceeded to perform simple electronics work.

The “repair plug” has 3 wires: 1 (ground), 2 (not used for our purpose), 3 (voltage). So if you’re wiring SATNAV for power, you need to splice the following:
• 1 to ground/black
• 3 to voltage/red

Once connected, go ahead and test it first!

What you look for are 1) does SATNAV turn on with key; 2) does SATNAV turn off with key? It will take a moment before the bike cuts power to the plug, so try not to freak out just yet!

With function test passed, unplug and route the newly spliced wire behind the gas tank. You might need to wiggle it around but there is enough room for all the components on the wire to pass through.

I’m very pleased with the finished product! Cables are neatly tucked away and SATNAV functions like it should!

No, it's the Motopump crossbar mount on the Unit Garage cross bar. See #1,246 for more pics. I am curious about the Evoterch mount and how solid it is though. I added the Tachometer to my Urban and now the gauges are a little cramped in between the Unit Garage cross bar.

I hear a lot of folks getting the Garmin Zumo for navigation. I have a regular Garmin GPS for my truck, and am curious if I can just use that instead? I imagine the Zumo is water resistant hence the steep price tag? Just curious.

I'm a Garmin fan and have had probably 5 or 6 of them through out the years. I'm currently using a NAV VI on my R12RT and a 395 on my R9T. Though they are no longer being produced, I think the 395 is great for a bike like a 9T because it will sync with the Garmin TPMS system which the 396 and new do not. It also has has a media player that will stream music from and sync to your phone if you need to use your phone. The best thing about them, you can use them in a downpour and don't need to cover them with a zip lock....

Many people do, but I suspect it is hard on the GPS. The moto units are designed for better vibration isolation and are truly waterproof. The new Zumo XT can also route Shortest, fastest, or curviest route. I've got an SD card in it with a few thousand songs on it, which it streams wirelessly to my helmet headset. I can also make and receive phone calls using the large Zumo screen and that way my less rugged and far more expensive phone can stay in my pocket, or charging in my tank bag, instead of exposed to the elements. Another cool feature is that I can wirelessly share routes with other compatible Garmin GPS units.

That's cool. Good to know. I'm still shopping for a helmet and Bluetooth set up. So I'll have to look into the Zumo units. Thank you for your input.

You're welcome. I went down the Bluetooth rabbit hole several times over the last 5 years. I went with a Sena SF4 recently as I wanted to be able to use custom molded earplugs instead of the headset speakers. The sound quality is night and day difference.

I run an old/cheap Garmin unit(paid $100 12 years ago) cos well, I'm cheap, and also don't have to worry about someone snagging the expensive GPS unit. Those ZumoXTs looks really nice tho. I don't know if it's the camera angle, but it looks as big as an ipad.

I wired mine the same way, but mounted it higher up so that if I am looking at it the road ahead is still in my field of view.

The camera angle makes it look bigger than it is. The screen is 5.5" diagonal. It's locked to the bike with the mount but if someone with allen wrenches and a screwdriver really wanted it they could get it. Like most 'anti theft' devices, they are for keeping honest people honest and maybe prevent a few amateurs from stealing it.

Upgraded from my old BMW Nav 5 to a new Garmin Zumo XT and swapped out the cradle today.

Wired in a spare BMW sat nav plug and all good to go. Zumo XT is certainly an improvement over the old Nav 5 :)

Hi. Sorry I’m still a noob here, where’s the gps plug you speak of, and do you have to have a video or pictures of how to install the Zumo to the plug? Will this continue to draw power when the bike is off? And would you know if the affects the warranty of the bike. I’m super keen to install the Zumo but I’m concerned about connecting directly to the battery.

@adv883 I have moved your post to this stickied thread under the 'Electronics' section that already has alot of detail to help you out: GPS on the Nine-T Thread
Maybe take the time to read back through and then direct any further questions here? Cheers ;)
