That spider mount holds the phone MUCH better than I do. Tried it in the mount soon as I got it. That sucker is so thin and slippery, I can barely believe it. Was shocked my phone came before my case and screen protection. I wasn't expecting it till October! Need the case just to get a good grip on it! btw, I got the 6, not the plus. I don't need anything else bulging in my pants pocket ;)

Garmin Zumo 590LM GPS

Anyone fitted the new Zuno 590 to R NineT?
I've bought one but still awaiting delivery of bike. Just wondered whether any advice on where to locate, brackets etc. Just a bit worried it will totally obscure the speedo etc

Zumo 590LM

I have one on mine and it's excellent. I used the BMW Nav bracket that's for the bike - it fits perfectly and does not obscure the gauges. I also have the Tire Pressure sensors on the wheels which are quite helpful - bear in mind that they're not highly accurate but they do give you a good sense of pressure changes.

One big advantage of the 590 is it's ability to stream music from my iPhone to my Schuberth SRC. I paired the iPhone to the 590 and then the SRC to the 590. I also use the Garmin SmartLink app and have access to weather and traffic info (The additional weather and traffic services have a one-time fee).

All-in-all it suits the Nine T quite well.

BMW Nav Bracket

Thanks for that, I'm relieved that there's a solution. Googled but can't seem to find the BMW Nav Bracket you refer to, is it easy to source?
Yes, look here and then go to the Accessories fiche:

It's about $80 but you also need 2 mounting screws that are about $10 each. Very simple to install. You'll also want to get the electrical adapter to make it plug and play into the bike's Nav power connector. It's discussed in the GPS thread:

Enjoy!

Hi Mike, cheers for the heads up on this mount.
I have a 590LM mounted to another bike using the included Garmin mount, but this BMW mount could mean I could use the unit on the nineT also. ;)
Could you please post up a photo of your set-up with & without the GPS fitted?
I can't quite get how/where it fits on the handlebars.

I already have the connector plug to go into the nineT GPS power outlet under the tank, but how does this wire into the BMW mount, and where is the power stepdown 12v-5v?

Thanks for your help. :D

It looks like a great sat nav, but has anyone used Garmin's customer service?

I've recently lost Safety Camera alerts since a recent update (either to IOS8.1.1) or to the latest Garmin App version for my iPhone 5s (did both at same time) and have contacted Garmin via message from their website (as they suggested). They say they will get back to you within 3 working days - a week later and I'm still waiting! Seems by reviews from other iPhone users I am not alone and their customer service leaves much to be desired.

Happy enough to take your money, but it seems they are very shy when you hit a problem....

I would seriously consider the 590 but frankly this recent episode has put me off somewhat.

Garmin service can be good or bad depending on what time you call and who you talk to. IMHO they should be working harder to keep their good customers because many of us are switching to our phones for navigation.

Jepp, and frankly: they suck. BIIIIIIG time. The hotline is stuffed by....well, lets stay polite....people that know less than they should.

OTOH the 590 is great IMO - it has had some teething probs and still has a few, but all in all I like it. I had the 660 before.

@rkevwill: the N5 is in the old 660 housing, thus it can be used with the old N4 cradle. The main differences are:

1) Display. Its hard, I´d go so far and say its impossible, to beat the 590s display in the sunshine. The best display ever.

2) Software. The N5 has few things the 590 has not and VV. You can't attach tire pressure sensors to the N5 for example. The main functions are the same.

3) Bluetooth: the N5 can be attached to one helmet and one mobile. The 590 can handle 2 helmets and a mobile and up to 4 tire pressure sensors.

I stream music to both helmets - I love riding with good music and I can't stand in ear plugs for more than 30 minutes or so...

I had the N5 for a few weeks before the 590 came out. I don´t ever look back.

If I´d use it on a BMW with the wheel the N5 would be my choice, but not on the R9T. The cradle is also good, loved the zoom in/out switches, way easier to handle zooming than on the touchscreen. (with certain gloves...)

Here are some pictures of my Zumo 590, the mount, and the BMW Nav Bracket - I apologize for the poor lighting. The Zumo mount comes with the 590 and attaches to the BMW Nav mount. The mount has a (long) wiring harness, you connect the power adapter plug to the power wires in the harness and then plug that into the bike GPS power plug (near the powerlet socket). The Zumo harness includes a built-in USB outlet which can be seen in the first photo - it's quite handy for charging your phone.

I have relied on a GPS for years. (My first GPS had a line pointing to coordinates. ) But on my latest bikes I have decided to go GPS free. I keep a GPS in my car but I don't use it very often. I feel almost freed up to enjoy the scenery. And if I get lost I can pull out my iPhone to get a general direction.

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with mounting a GPS. If you need one or want one then go for it. I'm just saying that I've decided to do without for a while. When my wife has to come and get me I'll probably change my mind. :|

Zumo 590 vs. BMW Nav V

Long time Garmin user here. Thinking of upgrading my 4th Garmin, my nuvi, to a unit thats useable in the car and on the bike. Whats the Pluses/minuses, on the Zumo 590 vs the BMW/Garmin Nav 5?
I have both - I use the Nav V on my K1600GTL and the Zumo 590 on the Nine T. I first got the Nav V for my GTL (before the 590 had been released). It integrates and works quite well on the GTL, mostly because the GTL has built in audio and Bluetooth. BMW had Garmin strip out some quite useful features (e.g. Ant support) and add in some BMW-specific apps which are pretty neat. They are clearly built from the same platform, but have enough differences in capabilities and form factors that they are not interchangeable.

When the Zumo 590 was released, I tested a friend's to see if it would fit in the mounting slot on the GTL but it was too big. After I got the Nine T in August, I used the Nav V for a while, but was frustrated that it didn't stream audio direct from my iPhone to my headset - instead I had to copy the music to the Nav V. It also does not have TPMS support. Because the Nine T has basic electronic capabilities, I decided to get the Zumo 590 and use it as a "hub". With it on the Nine T, I can stream music, check tire pressures, get weather and traffic alerts, navigate, etc. It suits my needs perfectly. I would have preferred to have just the Zumo, but it simply didn't fit into the slot dedicated for a GPS on the GTL. I hope that helps.

That look like a really neat fit! Is it a struggle to get the ignition key into the key hole?
Not a "struggle" at all. The BMW mount allows you to rotate the angle of the GPS: where I have it positioned for best viewing (I'm 6'2""), it allows easy access to the ignition. For shorter folks, just rotate it up, put the key in, and then adjust as desired - no tools are required - it's also great for adjustments during a ride as the angle of the sun changes.

Have a suggestion, and question, to all the experienced riders here. Why not buy a SMALL tank bag, and mount the GPS there? Obviously, you only need it (I hope, as we are MEN who don't need maps) when you are touring. Wouldn't the extra space be nice for items too? Unless I am actually touring, I'm not much interested in the big bags (like BMW's) I have seen. They seem a bit of overkill. I'd almost rather spend the $20,000 on a spare GS, than mess up the looks of the NineT :)
I think I
s better to have the GPS on sight, that is, if you have in your tank bag, you have to get your head down to look at it......eyes away from the road. Besides, a GPS can help to foresee the curves on a road, therefore helps the rider to prepare for the turn, adding safety.
