I have been riding the same route from my house to the BMW dealership for years. It is 86 miles round trip . . . some secondary roads and some interstate. I know every major bump by heart . . . especially one piece of irregular pavement (expansion joint) on the Interstate. That bump on the interstate . . . even on a motorcycle with good suspension . . . will really jolt you. On the way home with the new rear shock I glided across the bump and hardly noticed it. :D I will be ordering new front cartridges soon.
Dam you George! I think you've sold it to me :)

Apparently spelling 'Dam' correctly is a swear word - is this place Little House on the Prairie???

Say, "Darn, you." 0:)

The rear shock is absolutely the best money that I have spent on my R nineT. You don't realize how bad the stock rear shock is until you ride with the Ă–hlins rear shock. The motorcycle is totally different.

I'm driving down to the dealership tomorrow to pick up my old rear shock. While I'm there I'm going to see what Ă–hlins front cartridges will cost me.

I got my front cartridges from an italian store, I can pm you the info if you want, they have great prices.

Thanks but I'll probably stick with my dealership. They gave me a very good deal on the rear shock and a great deal on installation. And they got rid of the overflow canister for nothing. >:)

Did the cartridges improve handling? Were they difficult to install? How adjustable are they? Did you combine the front canisters with a rear shock?

Ok I couldn't find the time to install it yet, I went with Wilbers for the rear shock, next week I will be able to install it. I will post some pictures.

Hi all. I am thinking about upgrading suspension on my Scrambler with complete Ohlins package.
- On front I have decided for cartrige set : https://www.ohlins.com/product-item/60167/
- On the back: https://www.ohlins.com/product-item/62534/

Since for the back this is only option without removing charcoal canister I would like to know if this will make a difference compared to original?

Rgds.
J.
I can't comment on the front shock cartridges because I have had them installed. The rear Ohlins shock makes a HUGE difference in ride. The bike is much more compliant, much more comfortable, and much better handling.

The canister on the Scrambler is different from the canister on my bike. I don't know if you have to remove it or not.

I think I got a good price

A local suspension specialty shop quoted me almost exactly $3,000. installed for Ohlin cartridges and rear shock. Compared to the prices I got for installation by two local dealers of parts I would have bought elsewhere, the independent seems to be the way to go. I am hoping going with the suspension upgrade first, rather than a set of those sweet Kineos, will be money more wisely spent. Thanks for providing so much information on this and many other subjects, guys!

Thanks, George. After getting labor prices and a parts mark up from the dealers, I thought it sounded pretty good. The independent said almost 90% of their business was from cartridge and spring upgrades and recommended going that route, rather than a full replacement. That seems to agree with what I have seen here. After this, I think I am heading toward Kineos. I finally put a stop to the Rizoma bling. My area has been dealing with a terrible spate of opioid addiction, which can't be as awful as what happens to R nineT owners.

One reason to go with complete Ohlins fork assys is that they're lighter and have a better upper to lower fit so you get more steering precision and you should get longer seal life.
The other plus is that swapping the fork assys and shock is a (fairly) simple, normal hand tools swap. So while the complete fork assys cost more you can get part, if not all, of the difference back by doing your own installation.
Just another view.

Thanks, JohnT. That is something to think about. Do you have them? How about the rear? If so, are you pleased with them?
I'm running Ohlins forks, shock and steering damper. I like 'em. Expensive, but money well spent. R1200R wheels. Makes it a MUCH better (sport) bike.

Thoughts on the cartridges vs the full ohlins forks? Debating if the extra grand is worth the investment for the forks.
Pretty much just what I said in post #412 . I haven't had both versions just stock vs the Ohlins forks. The Ohlins are lighter and have a better upper / lower fit. The stock forks seem to have the typical "loose" tolerances on the upper / lower fit sizing. It's probably why you hear about fork seal problems and forks being replaced under warranty for repeated seal leaks.

I didn't think putting 1st class internals into 3rd class externals was the way to go. Been there and regretted it.

Thanks. I posted that after a few too many drinks last night. I read your initial post this morning.
