I'm sure I read somewhere that the Ohlins front spring set is 10% stiller than the BMW, OEM ones....

Happy to stand corrected, though!

Just replaced my rear shock with Ohlins. In part for looks, as it looks great with the stock front forks. I have no plans to replace the front as I'm not experiencing any bottoming out or dipping issues.. Riding the canyons with the rear Ohlins, so far perhaps a more stable ride, they come set up to your body weight and are infinitely adjustable with a turn of a dial. You can also easily adjust up-spring travel but I don't see a need for that. I am trying not to modify the bike, because if I really get started I will end up replacing everything. I did have my throttles balanced not at idle but under higher rpms. I'm not experiencing any flats spots in the power curve, bike seems to run perfect, so I'm not running just yet for a re-map.
I do have a vibration in the air intake snout, working on fixing that.
Cheers.
Bought the Ohlins from Dan at Klye Racing, ran around $1300 if I recall.

Hi Mr Clean, Any Pics Please?? I have just gone and negotiated on ebay with a seller from Italy. I have got one for ÂŁ825:00p inc P&P to UK so i am happy. I can only imagine just how much better this is going to look matching the Gold Forks than the stock item.

...

I also asked what the difference between the original and and the Ă–hlins front springs were. There was a lot of mumbling then and I could only make out words like "quality" and "precision" >:)...

Perhaps I am a bit confused, but didn't the sales rep ask for your weight and riding habits to determine at least the spring rate of both springs, front and rear? Best even to have that info the front valves and shims installed according to those two parameters..

As far as I can remember (and I may be wrong here) is that if you are buying full suspension units (including front fork cartridge kit) from a Ohlins agent they need to know your weight so they can set up the suspension to suit. This might also apply to just the front springs too.....

Like I said my memory isn't the best.... It may have been that typically the Ohlins springs are 10% stiller than OEM ones for the same rider weight....

Do you ever wish you hadn't contributed to a thread???? hahahaha (kidding) ;)

Nope, probably because they offer only one model each for the front and rear specific for the R nineT. I know for cars you can have for instance Ground Control coilovers that are designed to your needs. Ă–hlins seems to be generic for the bike.

Unless I've picked you up wrongly, @landski I think you aren't correct,,,,

The Italian supplier i have bought my rear shock off of has asked whether i ride the bike one up or two and also my weight so they can tailor the unit specifically to me (they say)

cozmo,
I'll try and take some pics assuming i can figure out how to download them.
Regarding other comments about this rear shock, the seller should set it up to your body weight before shipping. Other than that, for a BMW tech easy to install.
It really looks great, very happy with it, I wasn't necessarily unhappy with the stock shock but the white color was a bad choice. This is one mod worth the $$.

Cheers.

Jellies,
I think offhand there are 21 clicks total. More or less. At 10, I weigh 168 is was still slightly stiff. Or, considerably stiffer than stock. I backed it down two more clicks to 8. That seems plenty firm to me without shattering my teeth or feeling spongy at all. According to my BMW mechanic who is very experienced with Ohlins shocks, once the oil flows back and forth awhile, the shock will soften up slightly.
I figure I'll ride it at 8 and see. At 8 it's still more firm/stable than the stock shock.
Even if it didn't do a thing, the **** thing looks so good who cares...
Cheers.

Hmm, yes, seems my statement only applies to the front springs for the R nineT.

For the front cartridge kit, for instance, you have the choice of:

Available Springs:
Part No. Spring Rate
08790-65 6.5 N/mm
08790-70 7.0 N/mm
08790-75 7.5 N/mm
08790-80 8.0 N/mm
08790-85 8.5 N/mm
08790-90 9.0 N/mm
08790-95 9.5 N/mm
08790-10 10.0 N/mm
08790-05 10.5 N/mm
08790-11 11.0 N/mm
08790-15 11.5 N/mm

That's compression dampening, my mechanic told me to leave the rebound where it was out of the box.
As a side note...R9T buyers were told the bike was made to customize, implying there would be numerous mods from BMW. Either this was never really the plan or they changed their minds. Besides a handful of relatively minor cosmetic accessories, the factory or Motorad has come up with nothing for this bike. So, they assume customers are happy with the bike as is, or there is not a big enough market for more serious mods like exhausts, cams, heads, air intake, tuners, et.
But, I'm not surprised. BMW traditionally makes a product not designed to modify. Like Ducati, Aprilla, Moto guzzi, Triumph, et. they come as is with very few if any serious accessories. It's not like a Harley with thousands of available parts. I guess the point is, the bike is fine out of the box really, I think they did a pretty through job.

They certainly do dive too much. That's just city riding this week!

Roadrunner,

I weigh 168 and got in the habit of using both brakes on whatever I ride. I do mostly canyons so there are a lot of dips, banks, and downhills. I don't feel that the front forks are soft or experience really any diving. They seem about just right even under hard breaking.
I put progressives on my other bike for the reason you stated. My R9T only has about 1500 miles on it, if the front forks start to give I'll look into maybe swapping them out, but for now not an issue. I've heard some people complaining about the brakes, if the brakes were any better I'd be going over the handlebars, and the brakes are always the first thing I replace on a bike.

Agree, diving only at low speed with braking front hard. Canyon riding etc I like the front suspension. I just use more rear brake around town.

Yes it applies to front and rear. I just ordered ( from Kyle Racing - Roadracing Motorcycles ) the front fork assys, rear shock, steering damper and front fork cap tool. They're sending the rear shock with a 160 Nmm spring and the forks with 9.5 Nmm springs. I run between 210 and 220 lbs in street clothes.

Rear shock is on BO 'til late Feb and is being drop shipped then. Forks and steering damper are in stock.

All too often...

Well that didn't go to plan, the Middle man supplier kept on stalling me as to delivery date and his latest estimate was now sometime during April! I then contacted Ohlins direct and after 48hrs of waiting for s response they never even bothered to write me an email so I've gone and ordered a higher spec and lower priced UK made Nitron Rear Shock. All fully adjustable, in Titanium and Alloy construction with anodised Gold components with custom Black Spring. A saving of Aprox ÂŁ200 ish over the Ohlins unit. Once it's here and bolted on I'll upload a pic or two for anyone that's interested.

Nice to see folk choosing some alternatives to Ohlins. Would be good to hear your impressions of the unit once you have it on your bike.

Do you know if the shock was developed on a 9T or are they unsing a best guess based on a R1200R or similar?
