Is it a good idea to get a center stand for basic maintenance etc?

I have one on my classic. If the intent is for maintenance only, then might not be worth it. However, I see it as a much better and safer manner of parking the bike and ease of maintenance is a perk.

I changed the rear suspension in 15 min and can remove the rear wheel in 5min with it. But of course a stand can give you that although you won’t have one on the side if the road.

For me, the answer is definitely yes. As already mentioned, the center stand makes maintenance and something as simple as checking oil an easy task. A SW-Motech center stand was the first and most useful thing I've added to my 2021 Pure. Makes good, practical sense to me and provides more efficient use of limited parking space (like in a single car garage/workshop).

You said in your introducion that you have not been ridden since late '70s with your triple Suzi???
What kind of mainainance are you looking for?
Any stand is worth respecting the purpose. For example when having big luggage often, a centerstand really could help.
Becker is a bit tricky (have one) and could damage your engine by overflipping. I'm sure there are a few threads about it here.

from their site :

"If you lift the RnineT with too much momentum, the lifter can tip to the other side and thereby damage the motor housing.
The extension has always been included with the BMW R nineT lifter since November 2019. So you don't need to order them separately!
By extending the support arms, unwanted tipping is prevented.
The extension is attached to the lifter on both sides with a screw (can also be retrofitted to the existing R nineT lifter).
The extension does not work in conjunction with the marshalling adapter set (LR002) - but it is not necessary.
Consists of 2 arms + screws and nuts (for a lifter)"

For me, no. I had a centerstand on my old Honda VFR and used it frequently. But most often it was to lube the chain every 300-400 miles. (Spray-on chain wax, actually.) I really didn't want to pay the price tag for one for my R9T Pure, nor do I like the looks of it. Instead I bought a nice rear trackstand, which cost less to buy.

Would it be nice to have a centerstand for this motorcycle? Sure. And maybe one day I'll change my mind and buy one. But for now I'm happy with the rear stand.

I use the center stand on my R1200RT alot, but that bike is big and heavy.

For the R Nine T I use two paddock stands for maintenance, checking the oil, washing the bike, etc... The only time I wish I had a center stand is when I need to do something to the bike that necessetates dropping the final drive. Other than that, the paddock stands work fine and don't add any additional weight.

One thing to note about the center stand on my RT is that it is constantly getting blasted by road debris so the paint is wearing off and its starting to rust a bit. I really need to drop it and do some maintenance to it to keep it from getting too rusty. If I had it to do over again, I would have coated it with plastidip when I first got the bike to keep it from rusting in the first place.

I bought the Wunderlich center stand. I find it very useful and a little in the way. It is very useful for changing tires, checking oil level and regular maintenance and parking in tight spots. On the other hand, I have found it bottoms out first. Meaning when I hit a low spot in the road the center stand grounds first. I feel like this is a good thing because I am not smashing the cat or anything else under the bike. I have had mine for a couple years and do not regret the purchase.

Ive always had center stands. Needed even more so with the air/oul cooled boxer to keep oul from pooling on the low side..and thus keeping level avouds burning and using up a little extra oil.

I put the sw motech onine and disappointed. Not much support when on stand..makes bije a little precarius while on stand

Precarious how? I also have the SW-Motech stand and it feels quite stable. I agree a good push would topple the bike, but I think that is true for all center stands.

I always used the center stand on my 850R, and got the X-Ray for my 9T (if I'm not mistaken, the Wunderlich and maybe also the SW-Motech are rebranded versions of the same thing?)...

It was kinda cool and useful, but it was always the first thing to drag when riding hard, and between that and my bike getting bumped a few times, some of the bolts warped and didn't seem reliable. Plus, I got gearbox oil all over it during a fluid change, so I took it off and now use a pitbull stand most of the time. I also have the Becker technik which works great, however I need to find new bolts for that one because after installing UG headers it doesn't fit as is.
