First impressions of my R12 NineT, from a previous R NineT owner

So I picked up my brand new R12 on Friday at 5pm and have put on about 300 miles over the weekend. Some observations:

Comfort - a lot better than the 2015 model I owned previously, and despite being 8 or 9 years older I don't believe my arse is substantially more padded. So the combination of the new seat on the R12, possibly the lower height and maybe a slightly different stance has really pleased me. It's no tourer but so long as I stop every hour or so I don't see it being a problem, whereas on the old NineT I would get concerned about travelling too far from home as I would be increasingly aware of having to ride the "plank of wood" seat all the way back again.

Equipment - twin clocks look lovely; I did test the digi display which was pretty cool but I think the round clocks suit the bike better. All the info is in there on the little menu displays (tyre pressures, trips, temps etc.) should you need it. My bike was delivered unexpectedly with Connected Ride so by bluetoothing my phone across I could get a full phone satnav experience, plus all the telemetrics like maximum lean angle, acceleration/deceleration g-forces, journey tracks with elevation. Quite cool really. One point to note, the USB connection under the tank is USB-C - took me ages to realise by trying to plug in a normal USB-A cable! I didn't get a chance to experience the cornering headlight as it was still light when I got home. Ask me again in October :)

Ride - well it handles brilliantly. I've not played with the adjustable suspension yet but I think I'll maybe stiffen it up a little just to take a tiny bit of the springinesss out of the experience. If anything I think the 2015 model handled better than the R12 but that may be my memory from 8 years ago. In any case, the R12 has more adjustment available so I'll have a tinker when its had its first service and is fully run in.

Performance - still running in so not much chance to explore this on my own bike but the demonstrator I had did everything I asked of it. Changing down with Shift-Assist to blast past a lorry was a joy, as was accelerating away from lights. At low speeds it was easy to ride, but in town traffic you might want to keep an eye on which gear you're in or you may be slipping the clutch a bit to hold the slow traffic pace. Hill start assist (part of comfort pack I think) took a little getting used to but is great if you want to just put your feet down and adjust your gloves at the lights on a hill or whatever.

Other stuff - rarely have I owned a bike that attracted so much attention from bikers and non-bikers when parked up. It drew admiring glances from old and young alike, and plenty of questions including the usual "what are those things sticking out of the side?" to which I replied "foot warmers"

Criticisms - I haven't grounded the pegs yet but I did ground my toe on a right hand lean round a roundabout, so I'll watch out for that. I assume this was when my telemetrics recorded a 31 degree lean angle. On my third day out I couldn't get the Connected Ride to, well, connect, despite playing through all the usual resets and pairings. I'll have a play before I go out next, but of course the phone cradle was excellent for Google Maps.

A little more worryingly, there seems to be a very slight lag on shutting the throttle, it feels like the bike is going to run on for a bit, maybe quarter or half a second; this feels a bit disconcerting but once I was fully aware of it the perception of it as a problem diminshed somewhat. I read about it in one of the reviews too, so maybe BMW will update the software/fuel mapping. Oh, the new R12 didn't pop and bang on the overrun as much as the old NineT, which was a shame! Regulations I guess.

Overall, I'm really really pleased with my purchase. Despite riding 44 years I'd never owned a BMW until 2015 and this is now my 5th boxer twin so there must be something about the engines that suits me and my riding needs. I think the R12 / NineT is the closest in experience to the Norton Commandos I owned many years ago, but without the classic bike issues, and with obviously much better components.

Exellent machine. Enjoy the photos of a few locations near me.

Thanks for that terrific write-up of your new R12 nineT and for posting those great photos! 👍

I've only seen the new bike in person once, and just for a couple minutes in the shop where it was being prepped for the sales floor. But I have to say, between that bike and the photos above, the looks of the new model are growing on me. The bike I saw in the shop was green, too, and looks terrific. My only question is why did BMW leave the rear fender black? It's an odd choice not to color-match that part, especially on a pretty expensive bike.

Yes I wondered that too, as did two of the staff at the dealership :)
But you're right, it is a fabulous green up close in the sunlight outside of a showroom, really pleased with my choice. I mean, there weren't many choices, but the green is great.

i have to say that I've certainly warmed to these now. First look in the metal was about 6 weeks ago when I took my Pure in for it's 6000 mile service. Both models were there. Nice. Very nice. Both! Really like yours. They seem to get good reviews everywhere. Some people complaining about the pricing. Obviously you start ticking them boxes. Yes that base price does go up pretty fast. I had a look around the bikes. The quality still looks tops. Assume they're still made in Germany? When a lot of bikes now are north of £20K. They're probably not that bad price. And it's BMW. Would be nice to have a test ride to see if the comfort is better. I can't fault the Pure, other than the seat. Okay the suspension. Not the best. But it's not the worst. Coming up to 3 years old at the end of the year. Hmmmmm.....

Thanks for the review and good photos, potatan. Very good-looking bike. Out of curiosity, I did a "Build Your Own" on the USA R129T BMW website. The base model was listed at $16,295 USD, and $28,376 for the "as shown" version with many of the available options. Yikes! That's quite a hefty price range and way beyond my means now as a 2-bike BMW guy. Hope you enjoy every mile with your new bike.

Actually, the salesperson is the biggest BMW fan I have ever met ...... as we discussed how strange it looked on a showroom model they received before launch date - and both of us had only seen the bike on the configurator screen before - he said it should be green and offered to paint the part green on my bike for delivery. Ultimately, I went & changed the tail the following month.....

Thought everyone might find this interesting. 7 days after delivery of my new R12 nineT I got 2 messages from my dealer in Melbourne which stated there was a recall on my new bike re the ‘fuel filter’. Use to recalls on cars over the years and one on my old GS Adventure re front fork issue in 2016. However there was a push to get my bike in asap, like the next day. Best I could offer was a week away, due to being overseas. Was then immediately booked the day after my return. From this one can only assume this was some sort of recently discovered ‘major issue’. Got the recall done swiftly today by my dealer and non issue with normal great service. Told they flushed fuel tank, replaced fuel and filter, so still really none the wiser as to why. Only done 130 km. Thinking it could be they discovered aluminium fillings in tank after manufacture, or filter had issue or some sort of ‘whoosey what’s it’ was going to chew up motor (I have a good imagination).

Warranty and No charge.

Pic attached …. one of you may know something?

Excellent news for you.

Was going to ask my dealer about the tail tidy setup. Paid $1200 Australian for the front aluminium factory short front fairing spoiler and rear exhaust hanger for the single seat option (delete of rear pillion peg mount on left exhaust hanger). So not surprised that factory price would be up there for tail tidy set up. When I’m in at dealer I will check Aussie price as no price on Motorrad Site in Aus.

Well, I guess we can agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and cost/value is a personal choice.
Unfortunately - and on any other colour than black - unless you paint the rear fender tank colour it sticks out like a pimple due to it only coming in black whatever colour you choose for the rest of the panels.

All said and done - it is a original manufacturer's part designed for this specific model so hopefully weight - if not cost - was a part of that thought process.
