Keys - How Do You Manage?

I do not like the position of the ignition lock on the R9T. I want to have my bike key on my key-ring but the other keys and stuff would scratch the tank. What do other owners do with their keys? What about a leather key-pouch?

My tank is clear vinyl wrapped.

For daily use I have a leather case for my keys. House key, disk lock key, bluetooth finder, and garage remote live in the case, R9T key lives outside.

For track or spirited rides I often just use the second key with nothing attached to it.

I too just purchased an extra key and I use it completely alone. its the best way

but as far as Neprins and soft stuff

just go to a marine supply store and ask for key chains they are all very very soft and they are Floatable (thats why all is soft.)

or Buy a Tank bag (cover) even though I only use one key and do not have that issue I also have a Bagster tank cover an do not worry about any scratches at all

Agree with this, but it is an expensive solution just to protect tank from scratches! :)

I have the BMW tank bag and really like the look of the bag tank mounting strap on it's own. Looks classy and has the benefit of stopping key scratches. or scratches from my jacket zipper or buckle.

Stick with soft neoprene/rubber key fobs if you don't need the tank bag...

Or not putting them on until the key is in the ignition?

My problem is either leaving the ignition key in because I've opened the topbox or leaving the topbox key in and riding away. I've been stopped several times by people telling me that keys (my key fob, alarm remote and house key) are hanging out of my Givi topbox! The other day I left Ikea and found a 2001 F650 BMW parked next to my bike. It had a thick chain through the wheel and big padlock. My 2016 R9T was sitting there with the ignition key in. Doh!

It would be great to have all my keys together so I am going to think how I can do that without ruining the tank. On my old R90S with the headlamp bracket ignition key I had a chain for my keys and a small karabiner which I clipped onto my screen bracket; I might see if the same arrangement will work with it's younger sibling.

Multiple keys in any bike ignition is a big NO in my opinion.

Props to my local dealer. Keys are handed over on a small rubber BMW key ring.

(Note the seat thingy is encased in rubber as well.)

I have a small case which holds my moulded earplugs. Extra keys, top box of other bike, house key are attached to that as I need them to ride anyway.

As for something because you forget your key. Get a routine for getting off your bike and stick to it. Make key in pocket part of your routine.

I use a very similar system.......but use brightly coloured lengths of nylon string/rope.....the type that is normally the handles on gift bags etc.

My Triumph is lime green, R nine is red, Ducati is yellow, car is blue......

I have a loop of soft, brightly coloured webbing through my key - easy to find key when in pocket - easy to see/retrieve key if dropped - no damage to tank when flapping in the breeze. Strangely the aerodynamics on the bike tend to lift the webbing off the tank at speed - even better result as I have absolutely no expertise in aerodynamic design.

I still have my ancient neoprene soft key pouch BMW used to sell i don't know how many years ago.
It doesn't scratch the paint and inside i have my under seat torx screw and the control for my garage door.
I want to add also an alarm control to my NT but i don't know where is that gonna fit.
Till then...

I cut this little pouch for the house 🔑 (it’s on my 200 HP VMax🔑)
Reminds me who‘s fault it usually is ...

This came with my jacket and I now use it for my keys. Under seat key and disk lock key. The ignition key is on a small hook so I can get it off when using it on the bik, only ride with the single naked key.

Rest goes in my pocket.

Carried my bike key for as long as I can remember on a small split ring with a short piece of paracord added just to make it easier to remove from the bike. It's the only key on the ring, and all of my jackets have a small carabiner on them, which is where I habitually hang the key when I get off the bike. Have never lost a key, or scratched a bike with one. Lots of scratches other ways, tho 🤣
