I fitted the Pro Taper Adventure High bars to my Scrambler. I loved them however I just couldn't get over the advertising on the bars which detracted from the bike in my opinion. Not only that I should of waited to drill/mark holes once I had them adjusted to where I wanted them. I am going to purchase another bar, have them powder coated and then will install them. I am in no hurry though as I am extremely happy with what I have come up with since.

Awesome! So yeah ive heard about the drilling. Can a regular black and decker drill of Amazon accomplish that job?! Lol.

And i also agree with u about the labeling. Hence why i want to go with renthal twinwall vs the fatbar, nice big fatbar logo in it.

The protapers are narrower. How did you like the narrower (and slightly higher?) over OEM. What overall differences did you see?

Most handlebars now are made of aluminum which is a pretty soft metal. If a black and Decker drill is all you got it should be fine. What I feel is more important is to have a sharp drill bit. Drilling into a narrow round handlebar can be tough. Go slow. Take your time. I start with a small size bit work work my way up a few sizes. They also make handlebar guides for drilling holes.

Yep that drill will do it as long as you are using a metal drill bit.
I LOVE(D) the bars, absolutely perfect in rise and sweep for me. Had them on for about 100 miles but I just couldn't get over the logos/advertising. So I went another route with BMW risers, Rizoma clamps that are also up and swept back using the factory bars which puts it almost exactly were the Pro Tapers came out to be. There is a pic of the current set up in the risers thread.

I found the reach to the wide stock bars on my Pure too far for comfort. Ended up with the HeliBars riser and a pair of Chinese-made handlebars, available on eBay. These bars are pre-drilled and are 40 mm higher, have 15 mm more pullback, and 50 mm less wide than stock. The pre-drilled holes are a nice convenience and I was able to retain the stock lines with some slight re-routing (double-checked for clearance at the time of first service).

@GreenBonnie01 normally posting the same info on more than one forum section is disallowed here, but in this instance I think it's warranted and if you could provide photos it's really be useful to members looking for a more upright stance. Great post! :)

Sorry about the duplicate posting. I really appreciate the wealth of information on this site.

Here's some quick pictures of the HeliBars barback and Chinese-made handlebars fitted on my Pure. The handlebars look stock. The silver finish is slightly different, the paint / powder coating flecks are a bit larger than the stock finish. There is a also a black finish available. The bars also come with a cross brace that I didn't install.

Hello Green Bonnie,

None of my business, but it looks like you may have tightened your handlebar clamps incorrectly. In the second of your three photos above, I think I can see daylight between the gaps on both ends of the handlebar clamp? It's hard to tell from the photo. The official BMW manual says a gap there would be dangerous, and can cause your handlebars to work loose while riding.

The correct procedure is to loosen all 4 bolts holding the clamp over the handlebar, then tighten both of the larger bolts to 38 Nm. This would result in zero gap between the clamp and riser where the larger bolts attach. The next step is to torque the two smaller bolts to 19 Nm. All the gap should be at the rear of the clamp/riser.

Again, it's none of my business, but it caught my eye because I just did this the other day. I'd hate for you to get a scare with your handlebar coming loose. Just a well-intended tip between friends.

Best Regards, Tom

Hi GreenBonnie01,
I'm thinking about swapping the OEM bar on my Pure for something with a little more pull back. I have already installed a pair of Wunderlich risers but I still feel too stretched on the bike (I'm 1,68cm).
You don't happen to remember the name of the Chinese made bars so that I could order them? Alternatively I'm thinking of going for the Rizoma Ergo (pre-drilled) unfortunately they only exist in black).
Cheers
Carlos

Hi all,

No mention here to the either the Gilles clip-ons https://www.gillestooling.com/produ...e/variobar-verstellbare-stummellenker/1505/lenkerumbau-mit-ausleger-70-mm?c=179 or the BMW accessory ones: https://bmw.europe-moto.com/Guidon-...oires-moto-bmw-motorrad/8525-bmw-guidon-bracelet-reglable-r-ninet-2016-k21.html. The BMW kit comes with new brake and clutch lines as well as a few other parts (steering angle limiter, fork bridge caps, tank protector, etc)

I believe Gilles manufactures the BMW ones but those are supplied with the 70mm risers that Gilles comes with.

Actually, I was toying with the idea of getting a BMW OEM set and add the Gilles risers that can be bought separately.

Anybody seen, tried any of these?

Hi Calonso,

Sorry about the delayed response to your post; haven't been on the forum these past few days. The bars I used can be found on eBay. Try a search on "comfortable handlebar for bmw r nine t ninet". Looks like there's at least 3 Chinese vendors presently selling the bars, which are available in either silver or black. Wasn't aware of the pre-drilled Rizoma Ergo bars. Wonder if the Rizoma has the same dimensions as the "comfortable handlebar" which state that the bar width is reduced by 50 mm, height is increased by 40 mm, and pullback is an additional 15 mm. I'll be trying to find out.

JP, I have a Pure myself and exactly the same sensation with the handlebars. Installed some Wunderlich risers and I'm going to install a footpeg lowering kit (Wunderlich Ergo) but I would be very interested in the handlebar you described, specially as they come pre-drilled. You don't happen to remember the brand?

By the way, nice mirrors. Are they Rizomas (One)? I'm looking for round mirrors for my Pure as well. And compliments to the white paint scheme, makes the bike even "Purer".

Thanks, JP, sorry I've just realized that I had contacted you earlier but somehow your response escaped my attention. Anyhow thanks, I'll check out e-bay.

Hi Carlos,
Didn't see anything in the 2019 Rizoma catolog to indicate that their handlebar was pre-drilled to accomodate the R9T switches. Perhaps I missed something?

The round mirrors are those used on the R9T Scrambler and Urban GS. Found them lightly used on eBay. Thanks on the white (Urban GS) tank and (Racer) fender. Was also lucky to find both items on eBay. My goal was to have either a white or blue R9T to evoke memories of earlier BMW boxers (R100 G/S and R90/6).
